Build Log

2.4 Meter Horten VII

Well I couldn't resist any longer now that my Horten IIIe has flown I've decided to start the actual--glue it together--build. This is going to be an alpha/prototype build since I'm using it to flush out the design and prove (hopefully) that it'll fly. I've already made a bunch of changes to the drawing and I'll probably make many more.

Anyway, I've glued a few pieces together. Please no comments on the big part in the center. I know it looks like it was carved from a 2 x 4. If you look at the comments on the drawings you'll see that this part has been redesigned. The changes just didn't make it into this build.

I'll try to post some of the specs (e.g. motors, batteries, wing area...etc) tomorrow when I'm awake.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Enjoy!

Some specs

Here are some specs for the Ho VII...

Motors: Exceed RC Rocket 3520-1050KV (http://www.hobbypartz.com/86mc302-3520-1050kv.html)

Landing gear:
Mains - 25 - 46 100 Degree Rotating Electric Retracts (http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/De...ProdID=EFLG320)
Nose gear taken from - 25 - 46 Tricycle Electric Retracts (http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/De...ProdID=EFLG330)

Batteries:
two 4S ??mAh LiPo batteries. Whatever it takes to balance.

Joiner tubes:
two 7/8" x 36" (.049") from Tnt Landing gear (http://www.tntlandinggear.com/store/shop/wing_tubes.htm)

The wing area is ~10.8 sq. ft. At this point I'm thinking the prototype could come out in the 12lb range. That puts the wing loading in the 18oz/sq. ft. range.

The motors are rated for 1,300 watts. However, I'm only planing to put ~800 watts so that puts the power at ~133 watts/pound. If I need more power I can always add more prop or go to 5S If I feel like spending lots of money I can always switch to Hacker A40-10L V2s and run 8S batteries. Either way I can definitly increase power if necessary.

Thoughts?

Hey Bob,

I'm sure she'll fly just fine without the canopy and motor intakes. Do you want me to send you a current picture showing the real build status? Then you'll be under some real pressure.

What about doing a thin fiberglass shell for the center section? Kind of like wings over the web horten wing? Would be a bit more expensive, but save some weight and building time

Great idea! But I doubt that I'll have the time to do that anytime soon. If someone (you?) would like to step up and make and share a fiberglass shell then I will gladly provide all of the center section ribs and bulkheads for free. Remember this is an open source project.

I could do that. If no one is in a huge rush i can wait till youhet the design finalized and then work from there. It will probably be better off to wait till the outer wing panels are done as well so the joint line will be the same

I'm definitely not in a rush. We should definitely talk when the time is right.

I forgot to post this earlier. At some point the two threads will get separated so here is the link to the design/discussion thread: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1546211
