Question

Bigger BEC?

I was reading the specs for the VHVBEC saying that for servo loads over 80 oz/in you should use 2 VHVBEC in parallel. Am I the only one that thinks DE should make a bigger BEC?

I have a gaui 550 that is in need of some upgrades. Better servos with more than 80 oz/in and I plan to ditch the rx pack and voltage regulator in favor of a BEC. Yes my 550 needs to go on a diet. I also have only so much room since I recently upgraded to a CF frame.

With all these bigger badder machines coming out like the Beam 600 and Goblin 700, us heli pilots could use a BEC with more punch.

kavic5150,

We didn't have plans for a bigger BEC, but if there is enough demand, we would certainly consider it. What would be 'optimal' specs for a larger new heli-friendly BEC?

Best,

I'm really not sure. I think the servo market is moving toward more HV servo offerings, servos that can accept 8.4v input. I've been shopping around for a BEC to use on my gaui 550. Castle creations has a 10amp nominal/20amp max BEC and the others I've considered are from Gryphon:

This one might be overkill for my setup.

This one seems better suited with 7a nominal and 15a max:

Personally I would use your sportBEC on anything up to a 500 sized heli (425mm blades) with no worries. Its been flawless on my stretched 400 with 350mm blades and is cool to the touch after a flight.

Of course the big trend these days is flybarless 3 axis gyros and the higher current demands placed on servos vs a flybar setup. I wouldnt know since I have only flybar setups.

I usually hang out at helifreak.com. I think I'll ask about servo amp draw over there.

Sorry for the extended delay. I'm thinking for 425 to 550mm blade category a 10amp nominal and 20 amp max rating would work well.

There really arent many budget friendly BECs out there that match castle creations bec pro specs. And I just cant see spending $70 just for a BEC. Even though that gryphon 15a max does look good.
