EDF Motor Help

Drive System: 4100KV Outrunner Brushless motor
EDF Diameter: 64mm
ESC: 45A Brushless speed controller w/ 5A BEC
Battery: 14.8V 4S 2200mAh 20C Li-Polymer

Will I see improvement with an Exceed Optima 2010-5000kv,400W?

Yes, assuming the Exceed reaches close to its maximum output, and has sufficient torque to spin the fan with RPM at a high % of Kv x V, you'll get higher rpm, more speed and more thrust. If a 64mm fan is too much for it, it might be bogged down.

But if the Exceed's output is exceeded... 400W @ ~14v is only 28.5A... it might fry!

Any EDF motor 2810, 2815, 2610 and 2615 to 4100 kv, 4s, EDO fan 64 is for +600 watts.

One motor to 5000 kv is over 800 watts to 14.5 volts.

The exceed optima is only a 55 g motor 2610-5000.
You only can burning.

Hey Manuel V,
Are you telling me I will only burn up the motor and or the ESC?

Exactly! that tiny motor will draw a LOT more than 28A on 4s with a 64mm impeller.... and 400W seems too much for a 55g motor anyway!

Thanx......so what would be a way(s) to improve the jets performance?

You could find a motor which is more capable of handling the power you want to put through that 64mm fan... if you need 400W or 600W or 800W... you need a motor to suit.

Ask the DON! http://donsrc.com/cart/index.php?act...d&productId=52

Here is a post from an Aussie expert: "The GWS fan is one of the most efficient 64mm fans up to around 1.2kg thrust, push it much further and you risk shedding blades. Its also more susceptible to FOD damage. I finished testing of my new 24mm motor last week, data for the GWS fans HERE.

The most powerful 64mm fan I know of is my Hybrid wemotec fan, GRP molded or CNC machined alloy housing, custom machined wemotec rotor with all wemo parts, and various motor combos. The ARC2848 version pushes 1.4kg static thrust and has a high velocity, propels the ARC Vector Jet to just over 200kmh using 2600mah 4s1p 45c packs, pulls around 65-70 amps installed, 62A on the bench.

Hottest setup is the ARC2858-1, on 6 cells it pulls 75A installed with thrust tube and pushes 1.94kg thrust with an efflux of 393kmh.
Without thrust tube it pulls 66A, same thrust, 357kmh efflux".

Check this data Figure 1.
Data for HK for EDF motors to 3slipo.
Same motors Optima.

And compare with projection to 4s. figure 2.
Blue row is cool motors.
Yellow row is fine motor.
Orange row is for best and upper limit motors.
Pink row is not suitable motor.

The two 4000KV motors I sell in the 64mm EDFS are ~600 and ~675 watts on 4S. Many of the stock EDF systems have a smaller size motor of ~4100KV but they do not last long when run on 4S in the 64mm fans due to the short stator length. Running higher KV on 4S in 64mm fans has kind of been pointless as the fan units even when well balanced start to blow apart at higher watts. Most of the 64mm EDF models I have retrofitted my 64mm system in typically go about 95-105 mph on 4S 2200 lipo and that generally fits the bill for most users as you get speed and still a reasonable weight so landings are not to fast and they can still be hand launched. Some want real rockets but I tell them for 130 mph go to 70mm. What plane do you have?

That model does have an OK motor designed for 4S and is about 600 watts. Not much more you can do easily for more power on that model though. It really should have been designed with a 70mm fan based on it size and weight. HET has a new 64mm fan unit coming out that will run in the ~800-900 watt range but you will need a bigger ESC, bigger lipos, a new fan unit, and new motor.

Unfortunately I only deal with 50-64mm EDF power systems. 70mm and larger are not my specialty. Your best bet is to go to the foamy EDF section and find the thread on that specific model. I am sure people have upgraded them already.
