EP-1 outboard weight reduction
I am working on a project that required a lighter EP-1 outboard motor so I put mine on a weight reduction plan.
As it comes there is a honking big 550 for power up top.
It weighs in at 8.4OZ.
My plan is to install a smaller but more powerful brushless motor.
I really am not going for the extra power but hey!! I will take it!
The motor I installed is only 2.4OZ has 150% more power and is about ¼ the size.
The EP-1 is set up for the wider 25MM mounting width for the bolts and the brushless was a 16MM so I needed to make a mounting adapter.
This was OK as I wanted to add some water cooling and the adapter was the best place for that.
The motor will cool through the aluminum of the EP-1 lower end as well.
The adapter was made from K&S flat stock with some soft brass tubing silver soldered to it. I have a drawing of the adapter I made in PC paint.
The motor I chose is a BP H2217-4 from BP hobbies. I have used these motors before in boats because they come with a 1/8” shaft where most are only 3MM. The mounting face is on the front as well which make it easier to install.
It has great power for its size and the price is good too.
I tested the motor today in a container of water and no vibration or problems could be seen.
I will run the three motor wires out where the stock two exit along with two cooling hoses for the ESC.
It only took me less than a day to do the conversion and now the EP-1 only weighs in at 10.8OZ.
It is noticeably lighter in your hand and should work great in my project. Dave.
I applaud your zeal in trying to shed the weight.....
But if the original problem was simply to balance a rear-heavy boat, ( You didn't really specify why you needed to shed weight, but you said you were not looking for extra power) it probably would have been easier to just graft blisters onto the boat's underwater aft hull to increase the buoyancy in that area. Did you nix that option ?
I did not mention the project boat.
But all will become clear when you see the craft as weight not just in the rear will be a big factor.
Think hydrofoil. Dave.
