Getting closer!

Reported today:

These blades work out as 12x25's on a 30mm spinner and give identical performance to the GM 10x23's but draw 50 amps rather than 60 for the GM's. This means we gets 68 second run time on a 1600 mAh battery. The current draw is so low because the blades are really thin and pointy.

Another gets closer to production too!

Reported today:

We flew our prototype 10.5 x 22 with a Kontronik Kira 480/34 w/5.2 GB on a 5S TP2250 65C pack. We did not have a radar gun out today, so the speed is estimated on the other side of 200mph. As soon as we can get a radar gun, we'll get some accurate numbers.

The prop had been previously tested with quite a bit less power and had that "quiet" factor that the big folders have become known for ... with 1000 watts, it's stepped up to a definite growl ...

Things keep looking up for those keen to buy props soon.......

After reading about another Kontronik motor turning to toast, Mark flew his for only about 30 seconds of motor on time. It came back at only 110F and the gearbox was in the 120's. I have to wonder if there was something wrong with Andy's motor or esc settings because Mark's ran very cool.

LOL!

Steve,
My source was a bit coy in his PM about going public yet so that why I only cheekily posted a teaser!

On the issue of temperatures, he did say "After hearing about the recent meltdown of a Kira on 5S, I was a little conservative and kept full throttle runs in the 6-10 second range for a total of about a minute. Temps after landing were in the 115F range, so no problems there."

It is interesting that the gearbox had a higher temperature reading. You would expect the motor to be hotter wouldn't you? I guess that probably reflects in the accuracy of a laser temperature gauge on a matt black surface vs. a shiny surface.

Regards
Peter

Gearbox is probably acting as a heatsink, sucking temperature out of the motor case too

The Kontronik motor also has a fan. Mark put some cooling holes in the fuse, so I think the fan is able to do it's job. We've had plenty of trouble with pinions coming off of these small motors, so I guess the gears can get pretty hot.

Ordered my first pair of sawtooth prop blades today.

When you think that I started this thread due to the sensation caused at Muncie over a year ago and that Youtube clip of the Swiss team testing, I guess I've come to the conclusion in many ways.

Some nice photos that show how slender and thin these things are. Different to Speedcup blades.

I wish they were mine!

I'd forgotten about this one:

Ampere-Gerd's Sexzylinder gefangen (1 min 10 sec)

and this one to give me confidence on my X Plane maiden:

Viper3x 2nd flight (7 min 34 sec)

Peter,
I gave up on the CC controller and installed a $25 one in the Cyclone. I didn't have any of the Eagle Tree stuff installed though, so I can't tell you how many amps or rpm yet, but the plane made one pass at 232 mph and another at 227. The motor and controller are getting pretty hot now, but it all survived for another day.

Mark flew two geared motors also. They went well, but one started acting weird and we thing it's the CC esc. The other was fine and the pinion even stayed on after running for about 80 seconds. He said he let the loctite cure at 120F this time instead of room temp. That seems to have helped.
