Hey Herb,
Glad to hear all went well, any chance we'll see the video?
Oh! what did you come up with for the dolly, did you do a drop off or just fixed
for the first flight ? I'm sure best judgment went with fixed and we'll sort out the dolly later.

Thanks for the comments ! :-)

Fixed gear for now to see how it handles, droppable dolly maybe later.

Bobby took some video but the best part - the beginning i.e. the first two minutes or so - ended up just being blue sky and cool noises

I think Guy must have gotten the whole flight with better camera work.

Well, the thing flys great and looks fantastic in the air.
Looks like a fair amount of reflex but, what ever it takes.
Great job ! How did it handle, looked quite stable and tracked well.

Looks like the flight went very well and the 163 is a keeper.

Hi Thanks !

There's a second (good) video coming from today's flights

On the one above the esc overheated a bit and that was kind of an emergency landing.

On today's first flight I ran the pack almost empty (actually I have a very safe high voltage cutoff on he lipos) - so that was another emergency landing with a full 180 nice flat slow turn with no power left

The next video should show the classic Me-163 takeoff, flat first then up to the visibility limit at a 70 degree climb angles.

On the second flight today I was having so much fun that I smoked the motor, ignited the 100A esc and set Galland's feet on fire .

All is well though and I am getting a new motor !

I was happy it didn't catch fire as we ran to it!
The smoke out the back was a nice effect!

It's fast...you get a speed reading on it?

Sorry that you smoked the motor/ESC

Now i am ready to fly again, now with a external cooling for the ESC and a bit bigger hole for motor cooling, inlet and outlet.
I will start with 4 cell and 8x8 prop and take it from there...

... I will be installing a slightly bigger motor with the same kv (580) . Hopefully it will last a bit longer - if not, time to put in an even bigger motor

I would estimate the speed from the video in the 130 mph range, roughly. I was hoping for more but it's a big airframe.

I am sure glad the lipos and airframe did not go up in smoke (many real Me-163 were lost to fuel explosions).

.... Took out whatever was left of the charred 100A HV Brain esc, and inspected the motor.

Motor seems ok after all, which would indicate the ESC overheated and caught fire due to insufficient cooling.

I had a small fan on top, but the mosfet on the bottom ignited. There's a second flat metal heatsink inside the ESC that does not do much w/o intense airflow through the inside of the esc.

I connected another new ESC to the motor, and it seems to run fine. I opened a bunch of airflow holes through the firewall as well.

I cannot see any problem with the motor by inspection, so they only thing left is to go fly it again

Hey Herb,
Well, we're all learning a lot from your experiences and will certainly
benefit from them on our birds. I too am going to open up the firewall
for increased air flow for not only the motor but ESC as well. I liked the open
area in the nose for an air inlet, I will probably install a NACA duct in the cowl as well.
