Esc Blow up?

I feel really stupid guys, I am new at ths hobby and i have a 3000mah 40c 11.1 volt battery and i plugged it into my 18am plush speed controller. There was a spark and smokes blew out of my esc. Can you guys tell me what happened? Is my battery ok, can i still use it or did it completely short? I opened my esc after and there was no obvious or even noticible marks of fire or heat, but smoke came out of it. Thanks guys

something you should know

I made a converter for my battery so i would not have to cut the wiring. I do not think this was the problem though.

I have no idea what you mean by this.
Exactly what did you do?
It sounds like the + and - were reversed.

I do not think so, what i did was it had a fifferent male connector that would not connect to the female so i used a female from another esc that would fit the battery and attachedthat to a male that would plug into the female connector for the esc. I think it is because i have such a geat c rating. 40c for a 18amp battery, probly just overloaded it. Thats what i am guessing, tell me if i am wrong.

You are wrong
If the polarity was correct then most likely there was a short.
Just plugging things in normally would not result in any real load on the ESC or any other part of the power train.

Agreed, you could plug a 100C 10000ma battery in to your ESC and the ESC should be fine. Its the load (ie: motor or a short) on the ESC that will kill it.
Re-check your wiring..

Any chance those motor wires were touching?

No, I do not recall them touching at all. When i made that connector i aligned the black with black and red with red, are they the same through out all the batteries in the world?

Red + and black - are reasonably universal.

OK. If there was no short circuit for any reason and the polarity is correct, then perhaps the ESC was faulty.
Other than that... I give up.

Ha ok it was wierd the other day when i tried to add power to the motor it would just start twitching and then eventually start spinning. If i took off the power again it would do the same thing, also would get very hot.

Yes. Some motor / ESC combinations will do that. Altering the timing may fix it, but sometimes another type of ESC is the best option.
