Build Log

PaintBall Wing- All purpose Foamie Flying Wing.

Hello and welcome... (EDIT: I would to suggest you read through as much of the thread as you can because some new ideas have come to light and there might even be and updated set of plans further in the thread)

This is a blog for these Foamie Flying Wings that we have been having so much fun with. It's not really anything new. It's just how we do it.

Everyone that see's them fly wants one and this is just to help guide them along through the process of getting one flying. It will save me time in the long run from not having to explain it to so many people.

Dis-Claimer and Credits.
KFC - Chris DeGraaff started bringing wings to SEFF to sell (see HoJazz Videos)
Matt Kloss Dissected his wore out DeGraaff wing, made some changes and built a bunch of them to use for paintball shooting at SEFF 2011. I had volunteered to help out with the event.
I got permission from Chris DeGraaff and Matt to present this build on RCGroups.

I want to keep the blog on point. Feel free to comment, but dont get your itty bitty feelings hurt if I delete a post or 2 to keep things on track.

I know guys will ask for tiled plans. It's not something I'm familiar with at all.
If someone else wants to step up and make that happen... then they can send it to me and I will post it here as well.

Here is a Grayson Hobbies set of links for the electronics if you are interested;

I love the Hobby King Turnigy Park 450 1200 KV with a 10 x 4.7 prop.
Matched with the Hobby king Plush 30 Amp ESC

This Motor combo^

This receiver

These servos^ its more than you need but you can build a second plane or have spares
2 of these^
4 of these ^
2 of these^
You will also need a charger.

Here is a place to get colored box tape to decorate with. They dont add much weight but they add a lot of strength and look great.

Thanks for starting this thread, I have been annoying electrich for details of your wings since he first told me of them, and the activities going on down at the "patch".

What do you suggest for motor, battery and prop? I can work on rounding up what is needed while patiently waiting for the rest of the build details. Is the foam the 3/8" OC Pink fan fold?

Thanks, Bill

Recomended Electronics

There are so many ways you can go here. There are Hobby King $6.99 motors that will work great.
I like to keep the RPM's down and a good climb rate using 10" props.
Below is what my plane has on it, and it flies great.

E-flight or Turnigy Park 450 outrunner- KV Varies
E-flight 30 Amp ESC
Exi 9G digital servos w/metal gears. Hitech HS65's are pretty good too.
You need (2) 18" long aileron extension wires.
10 x 4.7 APC prop
Pushrod wire is .047 piano wire
control horns are at the users discretion.
2000-2200 mah 3S LiPo

Note: Dont chinch on the servos. HS55's are not gonna cut it. You breath on them and you will strip the gears inside. Use a 9G servo or bigger.

I'm not an expert on whether this or that motor will work. There are other forums that can get you an answer on stuff like that.

Here is a comparison of the Klos wing and the DeGraaff wing profiles....
I'm not sure exactly what is inside the DeGraaff wing so I have not finished drawing it up. Maybe later on....

This wing is gonna be too much fun. In the process of my wife printing out plans via trial and error to get the "right" size I now have a 35%, 75% and a 100% set of plans. While she's at it I might get her to print out a monster 200% wing, we'll see if I can harvest some cheap carbon fiber strips from broken hockey sticks. Can't wait to start building and flying soon.

Juniors plane.

Note: The Riblet in picture 3 is only glued to the bottom wing skin at this point (not the firewall)
As you pull the 2 wing skins together it will move in relationship to the firewall. You want to keep the firewall straight up and down.

The most stressfull part of the build

With 3 of us building a wing we were able to put the top sheeting down using hot glue. (Have you got your strings in to pull the aileron wires through in there?)

First we pre-bent the skins where they go over the spars to create a more pronounced Upper airfoil.... we repeatidly checked the fit and adjusted accordingly. (we also shot some great stuff foam in strategic locations for strength.)

We used 2 glue guns.
Lewis glued the spar while I glued the firewall , riblet and trailing edge....
Then all 3 of us quickly pulled the skin in position and held it with our hands till the glue cooled down.
The top sheeting has more curve beeing bent over the spar,
so it comes up almost 1/4 shy of meeting the bottom sheet.

^This seemed to work best at the edge of my table.

Repeat for other side

After its all said and done you take a yard stick and a hobby knife and cut the trailing edge true with the top sheeting.

Then I suggest you tape around this joint for strength.
