Question on diesel sound generator?

I just got a couple of diesel sound generators and was wondering if any one has any experience with this particular one. The box and instructions list it as an "electronic ship diesel". its from Germany, the company is "Model Bau Frank". It consists of a potted circuit board with two wires for connecting power, and a 3" speaker. There is a small clear sided electronic component (A light intensity sensor?) attached to the board outside the potting material.

The instructions:

Current from 4.5-15 volt. The ships diesel has an automatic change of strokes, depending on the running speed. connect the bulb parallel to the motor, bring the LDR (the clear sided component?) in optical connection. Protect both against light from outside. Adjustment of speed is obtained by possibly darkening the LDR in the space between the bulb and the LDR by darkening material. then it goes on to say, it's small, low current usage, protected from damage if wired backwards.

My guess: a small light bulb is connected in parallel with the wires between the speed control and the motor which is placed in a light proof box with the "LDR". The change in intensity of the bulb when power is applied determines the speed of the motor sound when picked up by the "LDR". the overall speed range can be changed by placing something to block some of the light between the bulb and the "LDR" kind of like sun glasses.

Anyone familiar with this (or this type) unit? Does my guess about the way it works sound about right?

Thanks for any help, John

Boaters are nice people.
Hi John,

If you've got a few pictures of the board, I could contact Modelbau Frank in Krumbach for you and make some inquiries.

Regards, Jan.

If you hook up the sound unit to your speaker and a charged boat battery you should hear some sound. Turn the roon lights off and try shining a flashlight on the LDR from a distance and moving the flashlight closer. Hopefully the speed of the diesel sound will change with change in light level falling on the LDR.
