Bad day at the slope today


I am completely depleted of flyable planes at the moment. Everything I own needs repair of some sort, or inital building.

Discouraged, I set about to put my Mach 1 wingeron back together. After locating all the little bits, installing a new tail servo, charging the batteries, and programing the model into my 9c, I headed for Glider Point.

A quick fiddle with dual rates (very important on a wingeron!), and I was ready to throw it off. Lift was a bit light, so I gave it a good heave.

Must have been good, because the internal switch slid and the lever moved to the OFF position. I had just enough time to give the plane a touch of up as it left my hand, where it promptly looped back in a big loop and landed into the sun baked earth. CRACK, scratch one fuse. DAMM! that's one fine machine, to be maimed in such a belittling fashion, it breaks my heart.

That loop felt like it lasted an hour, everything moved in slow motion, I must have put in a hundred stick inputs, without sucess. I even had time to project the point of impact and gauge whether I could get to that spot fast enough to soften the blow with my fairly soft body.

No such luck.

It's just sad.

Then I walked up to my friend Dave, flying his trusy Prodij and commented on how bad my lucks been lately. Right about that time, his battery gave up the ghost. The Prodij turned out away from the hill, and flew to the limit of the lift, then spiraled in, waaaaayyyyy down the slope.

Not a great day at Glider Point today.

Doncha just hate it when that happens? There's nothing worse than losing a favorite plane to some small mechanical or electrical malfunction.

One day my good friend Steve carried three planes from his car out to the cliffs at Kahakuloa. He went home with none; all completely lost, or abandoned on the cliffs. The only thing he carried back to the car was his transmitters.

I hope you will get a new fuse for your Mach 1 in time for Kahakuloa next summer, I really want to see that plane rip in Maui's trade winds.

You sure you didn't just forget to turn it on? Sounds like a pretty hard throw that turns the switch off
Seriously i hate hearing about wrecked models esp. ones that have a lot of time invested in them.

but seriously.. bad luck.. I am yet to make the step up to crunchable but when it happens im sure I can relate much better.

(its not entirly true, i owned and crashed two crunchie gliders in my youth.. about 3 years about ;-)

Sorry about your plane, and Dave's too. Need to get out there some more and see you guys.

I always mount my switches so when the switch is in the rear-most positon it is on, for just for that reason. If I brush the switch on launch, I want to be brushing it "on".

switch towards the back?


If you midair with an EPP machine, but it is savable and the switch turns off, where does that land you?

Dang if you do, Dang if you donít. There must be an answer somewhere?

I was at this comp years ago. The guy brought out a brand new Multiplex Flamingo. It was just released at the time. This machine was finished beautifully!
Back then these models made the jaw drop and the drule run down the side of your face.
Anyway, he has hooked it up to the winch, hit the switch and up into the blue it went. I turned to my uncle and said, 'why is he turning it to the left'. The look on the guys face when he figured out that he forgot to turn the Rx on was one not to be forgotten.
I dont know if he found it, but it just kept flying. Looked like the balance was good though.
Some days are not worth the hassal.

Same thing happened to me with a SR-7 that I spent forever on detailing like a USAF jet. BIG LOOP, straight down on hard bed rock. Don't let any one tell you "duralene" is indestructible.........

Dido on that droydx! Actually I hate to addmit this but I was out to maiden my first SR-7 and was so excited about it that when I did my pre flight check.. well all the controll surfaces moved.

I just didn't notice that the elevator was reversed!

Oh ya, you guessed it! One big throw off the edge of a massive slope and sraight into a giant boulder!

Dureleen has a funny way off deforming!

Oh well, cut off the first 3" of the nose and eppoxy a reshaped piece of hardwood and I'm still flying it to date!

LOL, I have reversed a servo a time or two... My favorite fumble is to launch with the wrong model activated in my TX.

Wow my Saturday session saw me crack the fuse on my Moth (I hadn't gooped the access door in place yet) when the tail came off I crashed into a rock... real real hard... Lost the tail in the bushs at Poway and haven't started the repair process.. I also had to hike several times to get my Raider.. But learning to DS is worth it...
