2012 Vintage & Old-Timer Build-Off

2012 Vintage & Old-Timer Build-Off time.

Last contest was a lot of fun and I learned more from other modelers. I think we were a success, and I hope others think so too.

For this ONE contest we can call it amnesty, any models already started can enter. Ideally, models not finished, but will be done by December 1, 2012. This should allow all models who want to enter.

The 2012 Build-Off will End December 1, 2012.

2012 Vintage & Old-Timer Build-Off Rules

Any aircraft designed before 1960.

Any size, any type: Biplane, glider, scale, amphibian, racer, pusher, FF, RC, CL, etc.

Kits, scratch build, wood, bamboo, foam, glass, cast iron, feathers, bones, etc, are all OK !

Build log: You must start a build log, just a little info about your build with a few pics, linked to the contest

And last, Flight Verification: pics and/or video of you model flying or trying to fly

I like the 1960 cutoff as it brings a wide range of models you could build, from being floaters to others being fairly aerobatic models.

I think the way it was run this year was great as it attracted lots of interest.

As for scratch or kit or short kit building, I think they all should be judged together as then it would just complicate things and give you more work.

As for cars and boats well if someone wants to do that I think it would be OK but maybe in a separate category, as most here build flying models.

Now when do we start?

Scott - I'm with Lionel, I think the 1960 cut off is perfect, and I also agree that boats/cars and things would be fine but in their own category.

I'm not sure what the big difference is between scratch/kit building? All of these planes need some creative thinking to get them built and flown anyway (its not as if there are ARF's available?)

As far as length, why not 1 dec 11 to 1 dec 12?

I'll go with Lionel and Owl on the cut-off date, 1960 is fine by me.

Boats and cars? Sure, if anyone wants to, but as a separate category as the challenges are different to the aircraft (NB, not harder or easier, just different!)

I don't really see the need to differentiate between scratch/laser cut/full kit, you can do that when you vote - given two models of otherwise equal merit, one from a laser cut kit and one scratch build I would simply favour the scratch built one due to the extra work involved.

Starting date of 1st December sounds OK to me.

And I second the vote of thanks for organising what was a very enjoyable build off in 2011; some of the build logs were inspirational, and like you, I learned a lot. And finished up with 3 great flying models which I might not have otherwise built.

I'm not really a fan of such loosely defined, anything goes, build offs with just a cut off date. The "one design" type is the other extreme but this can be a bit boring.

I prefer the sort of thing that we have going at the moment for Frog designs instigated by Sundancer. It made me look carefully at their range and discover models I never knew existed and I ended up, as George did, with a couple of nice flying models I would never have otherwise had. I guess it doesn't attract as many participants but of course there is room for both types and the 2011 general event certainly had a good entry. Well done O&W

So, many thanks George for your inspiration and moderating efforts and I am looking forward to the next one which I believe may be for Keil Kraft designs.

Ray has a point there - with unlimited choices, we ended up with a huge diversity of aircraft, but it could be kind of fun to limit it to one kit producer or designer. (I've already got two KeilKraft designs picked out). But - what about picking one of the designers? Say Ben Shereshaw or Hal deBolt? Or would this take away some of the appeal?

For my $0.02 worth, I'd hold forth doing a glider / sailplane build-off. OK, full disclosure, I like gliders, but there are gobs and gobs of powered builds being done so this would be something different. Maybe encourage those that would not normally build and fly a glider, to give it a try. Could / should be open to unpowered and power assist types RC or Free Flight. 1960 does sound like a good cutoff date. Maybe not for this particular build-off but would be one that I would sure jump into if someone were to take this and "run with it".

I really enjoyed this year’s build-off! And would love to participate next year; however I am not particularly satisfied by the concept of neither individual designer nor kit! As I for one am rather fussy with my builds especially vintage! And firmly believe that the emphasis should be based on vintage models rather than a kit build off!

I would also like to know if there is a WS limit and are free flight models eligible as well?

OK, I think we should keep the 1960 cut off year on models.

Aircraft only. Any size, any kit or scratch build, RC, CL, FF, electric glow, diesel, etc. The idea is to make someone want to build and fly a model airplane.

Why limit the models to a few designers/kit makers?

As it is, I have four old timer models with another two on build. I live on the coast, so a vintage glider would be great for sloping, also I need a plane for cutting the wind like a vintage air racer and I want a vintage flying boat/float plane for the local lake.

From Dec 15, 2011 to DEC 1, 2012?
I know a year sounds like a long contest, but a full 1/3 of the entries didn't finish, myself included.

Keep it up fellows, I like what I hear.

I think the time should be December 1st till the 24th November as that will give a little amount of time to do judging etc, and any way I want to start building and the 15th of December is so far away still

How about 2nd January till 2nd December? Full 11 months, gets us past Christmas of this year..a month away from the building board isn't a bad thing, as it allows one to rest his/her mind, and we all need time with the family at Christmas/Hanukkah/Winter Break i might be installing a clutch in the Stude next couple of weekends-don't ask.

Other than my little suggestion, I'm good to go on the cutoff date, kits/scratch allowed, no cars, boats, unless they are judged separately.

The exact starting date doesn't matter much, as long as the rules are otherwise nailed down by that time.

I do agree with Cash in a way! seeing as it is a 2012 event and it might give others that did not finish on time this year to do so before January I think 2nd of Jan to 30th Nov sounds good!
