Wonderful occasion, Julian! I see Armed Forces members, a lot, in public places. And I always go up to them and shake their hands and thank them.

Thanks again guys.

Maiden went off without a hitch.
Did a thorough pre-flight, set the Coug' down in the barest patch of grass and hit the gas. In less than 75' she lifted off.

Had to hold a little elev to make her climb out. I would rather that than a plane than zooms straight up.
I set it up purposely nose heavy (paid for it later) but she handled smooth as butta'.
Needed a few clicks of up elev and one click Rt aileron to fly hands off.

Have an HET 6904 w/ARC 28-58-1 on 5s, cruises easily at half throttle. WOT is fast but no barn burner, probably just a little over 100mph.

Landing was a non-event.
First approach was kinda hot so I went around again and greased it in right in front of me. Nose heavy CG really had me leaning into the elev get her to flair.

Second flight was a piece of cake. Another grease job on landing.

Third flight is hot passes right on the deck. Landing approach was hot and nose down. Into the elev all I dared (dang forward CG) not wanting it to snap on me. It hit on all three just as it leveled out, bounced up and I set her back down easy.
The nose wheel collapses (must have broke on the first hit) and there go the nose wheel doors.
I should have gone around when it didn't look right but my timer had already gone off.

Can't blame the grass for the nose wheel breaking. It was pure pilot error.
Retracts and doors worked flawlessly in the grass up until that point. On a paved runway it would have been worse.
I knew it was nose heavy and should have started walking the CG back on the second flight. Live and learn.

It will be a simple repair. No real damage. The nose gear door hinges are still in place, the doors themselves are in one piece and just need to be glued back on. And I have spare set of retracts.

With the proper CG this thing will float in. Can't wait till next weekend!

Oh yeah, almost forgot! Sam was there for most of the afternoon and saw the first two flights. We were both grinning for ear to ear.
I buddy boxed him on my L-4 Cub and now he's hooked. May have to try and hook him up with ATIS.
