F-9F Cougar - balsa (and a little foam) scratch build ***maiden video***

Gonna let the old thread fade and start posting the progress here.
Please feel free to jump in with ideas and suggestions.

Spent last Sunday afternoon trying put together a built up stab assy.
I wanted the elev servos in the stab. Very tight on this size model. I just couldn't figure out a way to make the stab as strong as I wanted with the servo taking up the area the spar should run through.

So I gave up on that and hot wired some stabs out of foam yesterday.
Got 'em all slicked down and sheeted in 1/16 balsa. Glue is drying as I type.

Also been detailing the wings.
Flaps & ails cut out and dressed. Starting on the servo hatches. Hoping to have the top skins on before we head out to the in-laws tomorrow morning for Thanksgiving. I can bring the wing panels with me and do some sanding. Shaping the LE is one of my fav parts of the build.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Nice Julian!
Next time you might want to consider using a RDS setup on something. like the elevator system but is perfect for stuff like that.

hehehe, like you never use any.

I've always thought that RDS set-up was too cool. Maybe next time.

Hey! Lay off Fuzz! Julian's coming over with the good guys! Next it will be hot wired foam laminated wings and working up to a foam fuse with maybe some fiberglass thrown in.

Good to see some balsa work herer Boogie. Looking good.
Fuzz has been caught using foam a few times, although for smaller items such as wing fillets. I hear he's even stuffing the turkey today with foam peanuts.

Don't worry Fuzz, I'm still old school balsa. ...and pink is the new gray. Think of it this way, it's a mellow "Red".

The controversial stabs are almost done. A little sanding and I can cut out the elevs.
CF wing spars installed, good dry fit to fuse. Wings ready for top skins.
In the process of beefing up the rudd to hold the stab.

thanks for all the compliments,
Julian

J,

It's looking great. Your shapped stabs are nice. I'm thinking about trying hot wire foam core wing but its a tough croud over here to bring up the F word.

Thanks Jeff.
Go ahead and try hot wiring some wings. Piece of cake.
I would probably use it more but it's tough to find a local source for the thick stuff down South. Home builders use minimal insulation down here.

Been working steady on the Cougar.
One wing ready for shaping, elevs cut out of stabs and sanded slick, hatch cut out. ...the big, big hatch.

The template for the intake former wasn't on the set of plans I had, so I had to do a little bit of coon-ass CAD work and came up with a template on my own using the front, top & side views. Plus just plain ole eyeballing pics of the real thing at primeportal.net.
Just a fuzz under 100% FSA.
