looks darn good so far, despite humble origins.
I've an Aerographics Me 163 @16+" span that is tempting me to retrofit a wee BL motor. (if not built an Aerographics yer missing something, decent quality printwood And the parts actually fit.. perfectly. Nice Kits ..seriously recommended )
I figure if yours flies well, then my 163 is gonna see air time whether it wants to or not :-)

If not bigger, maybe the location may be a bit unorthodox, such as breaking up a 2 cell and having the cells right inside the cowl, on either side of the motor. Hopefully not, but it was the point I was at, with light sheeted version. The larger one does well with the batt against the firewall though, which should hopefully scale in the same fashion for your lighter tailed version.
The aileron torque rod setup looks good. I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of small aluminum tubing.

Very nice work on that ailerons! I like the hinge you did, unfortunately i can't use the same technique on my Scout i'm converting.

Bill, I plan on mounting the battery in the cowl below the motor like I did on the Hellcat. The Hellcat still needed a few grams of clay packed into the front of the cowl to bring the cg forward.

Gupi, thanks man, the aileron setup has evolved over the span of many models.
The heat shrink tube pivot works great and is easy to make.

That heat shrink pivot is ingenious. I spent way too much time adjusting a metal pivot for flaps on a UM P-51, that little gem would have been so much easier.

Do you find the aluminum tube more effective than just music wire?

I can't take credit for the heat shrink idea, I snagged it from somewhere.

It is a whole lot easier to set up than my original method of bending the ends of the torque rod levers into a loop. A plastic bushing was glued into the loop to prevent metal to metal contact.

The aluminum tube is much stiffer in torsion than wire of the same weight.

Motor mount


The motor mount rails are cut from 1/4" square. Holes are drilled in the rails for the gearbox pins to fit into.
The prop shaft was removed from the gearbox and a piece of wire slid into the bushings acting as an extended shaft to help with alignment.
A hole the size of the wire is drilled in the firewall a little left and up from the exact center.
Now the mount rails are stuck onto the gearbox pins and the extended wire alignment shaft is inserted into the hole in the firewall.
Next the rails are angled to give down and right thrust and glued to the firewall with enough offset so the prop shaft is centered in the cowl opening.
A couple of gussets are added to tie it all together.

Tail feathers


Pretty standard stuff here.
The horizontal stab was narrowed to a more scale appearance.
Vertical stab is made up using a laminated outline. The form was cut from scrap Dollar Tree foam. The outline is laminated using 4 strips of 1/16 x 1/32".

Started covering. Kit tissue attached with thinned white glue brushed on.
The tissue is water shrunk then given two coats of dope. I've found two coats is the minimum for moisture resistance.

Man, this thing sure is purdy. Can't say I have ever seen a cleaner, neater ultra micro build than this one.

Quick question about thinned white glue for tacking down the tissue: will the bond be affected by later coats of lacquer or dope?
