So Brent was it raining allot down their?

Yesterday I did some taxi testing. Started at the end of a 600ft runway on 10 cells and plane did not look fast enough for a nice rotation. The 5/32 wire struts are too soft and plane veered allot.
Went to 12 cells and now there is plenty of power but did not dare to bring it up to rotate speed because the CG was now off.
So I need to set up for 12 cells and use stronger struts. AOA is 4 degrees and may go to 6.

Maiden report


The lakebed at Edwards AFB is like cobblestones.
First takeoff roll the right main gear screws ripped out of the plywood. Repaired the wood with super glue and used wood screws instead of sheet metal screws.
Second takeoff was within 400 feet climb out was smooth but slow. Continued with the climb and started the first turn. Noticed that the roll on the elevons was good but pitch needed allot more movement. Speed kept on increasing and soon It was at about 100 feet up. The plane was very sluggish and was hard to judge its attitude because it was about now 600 feet away. Was able to somewhat coordinate the turns and tried to make the first approach, but speed was to high. On the second approach I over ran the runway and the landing was 100 feet from the end of the runway.
The wings where level when the mains touched down and then the left main gear broke, wing dug in, nose wheel broke. plane flipped over and broke the canopy and vertical.
I was to much on the shaky side to adjust the trim or feel the position of the elevator stick. It felt like the plane was nose heavy. The D/R is 70% roll and 45% pitch with -40% Expo on my Futaba T10CAG transmitter.
I need to move the CG aft and give more D/R for the pitch.
I used 3/16 wires for main struts which caused the energy from the rough lakebed to pull the screws from the wood. May need to find some struts to absorb the energy.

Sorry to hear of the damage. That lakebed must hav been really rough. You need a better site for a maiden. Hope it goes well after fixing.

I was out by myself and could not take any pictures in flight. I did have a pen camera mounted under the canopy but it would not work. Played with the thing the night before and worked perfectly. Brought it out to the field and would not even turn on

Had a very difficult time getting the plane to rotate. Gear was relocated 2" behind CG. The plane always flew nose heavy and landed long. Thrust line was above and parallel to CG and possibly not enough washout caused rotation and flight problems. I would have to scale up so I could move the thrust angle up and through CG.
The MH-60 is a reflex airfoil and has a negative lifting moment so washout is needed. Still needed up elevons (crow) to fly level. Rotation was about 35 mph with the plane weighing 16lbs. Sitting on the ground the plane sat at 3 degrees nose up. The tail was about 2" above the ground and the exhaust was deflecting of the ground that also contributed to the nose heavy condition while the plane was on the ground.. First flight was with longer gear and rotation was about 400 feet. When I made the gear shorter, it caused the exhaust deflection problem and takeoff speed could no be reached. A higher velocity fan did not make the takeoff speed faster but contributed to that nose heavy condition and speed for rotation also could not be reached.
Intakes did have sharp edges and were shrouded which cause restriction. Cheater hole were made to fix this.

Wing was hot wired, patterns are attached.

Are you building a build up wing or hot wire foam core?
I can send post the build up with ribs at 4". It does not have the wheel well mounts or servo mounts.
