The new guy
If you've been out of the hobby for a while and coming back you'll be pleasantly surprised how easy 2.4 GHz makes things. As others have said, it's the same technology as WiFi, so if WiFi isn't a problem for you then your radio won't be either (I'm doubting the AF would have rules banning WiFi, it would be chaos to try and enforce what with most everyone's smart phones blasting out 2.4GHz all day).

Congrats on the new radio.

Something Witty Goes Here
I Seriously doubt the AF is running anything in the 2.4GHz range, at least unencrypted. And they can ONLY control open frequencies ON BASE. Almost everything they have running RF (even voice) will be outside of open frequencies, and even HAM frequencies. The only off base frequency restriction I know of happens to be in Northern California, and it's at the 420-450 MHz band. You cannot transmit above 5 or 10 watts, because of some radar system that watches the entire western coast. The east coast has a similar system so they may have the same restrictions.

Also to use 35mhz in the US, you are supposed to hold a license saying that you can.
