Question
Mini TopSky or Elf
I'm looking to try my hand at DLG and am considering these two kits. I will be flying at local small parks and schools. I've never really hand launched before. I'm not a great builder, but am willing to try. Been sitting around watching the classifieds for a couple months looking to score an intro DLG but am tired of waiting. Was going to try an Alula but looking for something that works small lift better.
So, which would suit me better and why? Any and all input appreciated. |

I vote top-sky. If damaged the top-sky will be the easier (of the two) to fix to satisfaction. The bagged wing is easy to fix with tape and/or CA.
The elf is probably a "better" flying airplane, but is very delicate if mis-handled. Damage (small rips/tears) to the covering can be patched with scotch tape, but if the under structure gets damaged you are in for a steep learning curve to get the plane flyable again. |

Not to muddy things up but Fireworks makes a mini as well. Just a thought, if you have moved past that choice sorry for the mud.

I have not flown the Fireworks but I got to handle one at the Bruce. I was told it was a bit heavier than the Elf but flew very well and was durable. On of my buddies has the TopSky and it flies very well for him.

Try the Mini Topskys!Quote:
I fly both versions of the Mini Topsky. Keep the weight down and you will have a blast with either plane. The quality of the parts is second to none, the price very reasonable and the plane is tough. The Mini Topsky is outstanding for ballasting purposes: the fuselage can accommodate a surprisingly large amount of ballast. Four to six ounces of lead fit in without a problem. This is an issue that many, many designers of mini dlgs have overlooked. What a pity. Without ballast you are severely restricted in your flying outings. I fly my mini Topskys in winds up to 15 mph quite comfortably with the ballast. Alan |
