Whitman’s Marauder Hovercraft


Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum which I discovered while doing a search on the Whitman’s Marauder Hovercraft. My late father bought it years ago and never put it together. All parts still in the box WITH instructions and a OS .60 engine.

I'm 51, a Systems Administrator (AKA Network Admin) and have built cars, planes, gliders, and boats so building this hovercraft will be a new and interesting experience. Hopefully I'll get started on it soon. I'll take a few pics as I'm building it and post them now and then (if anyone is interested ).

I plan on scanning the instructions into my laptop and creating a word DOC or a PDF. If anyone wants a copy (I've seen a few threads where some members were looking for a copy), I'll email it or get it to you somehow.

(He also left me a partially built Concept 30 helicopter which will be interesting to work on!)

Well, so far it's about half built. As soon as I get some time I'll upload a few photos.

And, as much as I'd like to finish building the Concept 30 SX heli I just don't have time for it... I think I'll be looking for a place to sell it.

It was/is fun to build. I'm still looking for an air cleaner setup, possibly something from a 4WD buggy.

I also have to get a drill bit the same size as the shaft of the OS .61 so I can drill out the prop to fit.

Then to break in the engine. Any pointers?
I've read various posts on the net about how to break it in, most with different techniques.

I think your pics pretty well covered it, thanks!

Is your engine a ringed type or an ABC type? Because it makes a difference in the way to break-in the engine.

First though, is I strongly recommend you remove the engine from the vehicle and instead use an engine test stand. Trying to break it in while in the hovercraft will be a hassle and potentially dangerous.

I hope you have an electric starter for it? Especially when it is in the vehicle, you will need one.

It's a ringed (heli) engine (OS Max .61 SX-H, P/N 17910).

I don't have an engine test stand, guess I'
ll have to construct one!

And yes, I have an electric starter (complete field flight box).

Okay, the normal procedure for breaking in a ringed engine is to first run it very rich, slobbering rich, for a tank or two. Then start leaning it out on subsequent tanks. Every now and then lean it to peak RPM for about 10 seconds and then richen it back up to where it was before. Let it cool completely to ambient air temps between tankfuls.

A break-in prop for an airplane 60 sized engine is 12x6.

I make break-in props using an old method I got from a Harry Higley book. Take the normal prop size and add 1". Then cut 2" off the prop. So for a 12x6, you would get a 13x6, and then cut it back to 11x6. The idea is to make a prop that has a stiffer blade, produces copius cooling air, and a slightly lighter load.

Use a fuel that has blended oil, using both synthetic and castor oil. 10% nitro is good for break-in. I recommend either Powermaster or Wildcat.

I have several 12x6 props and I have yet to get the fuel.
Then find some time to get it done!
