Question

Help with an Italian name

This place seems to be a font of knowledge so I'm hoping someone here can help out. I have to send a letter to a person that I've never met with the first name Verginio. Would that generally be the name of a man or a woman?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

I'm guessing, but the "io" ending seems to indicate male.

So the guess is male. Any substantiation of that would be greatly appreciated.

If it's a spelling variant of Virginio, it appears to be male.

Scroll down to number 88: Verginio, male

Thanks, Karl. The baby name sites I went to didn't have that name.

Funny, but the "ver" means truth. "Gin" means kind. "io" means one who is. I would translate his name to mean "one who is truly kind".

Liking the logic

Is that a bit like De and Troit

De - crap

Troit - hole

Not exactly Italian I appreciate, but I think we can all concur that the principle has been largely adhered to

It sounds male to me. Probably Verginia is the female equivalent. She was at least in ancient Rome where she was the undesired object of Appius Claudius' attentions.

From my limited knowledge of Italian - ending in 'O' is mandetory and if it's not, it'll get you by in Italy!

Italian - English

Italiano - Italian

Now contine with your order at the restaurant - trust me, it'll work

Egg and chips - English

Eggio and chippio's - Italian
