I'll be there!! Cumberland is a fun place to fly with a variety of soaring disciplines on display. We will be aerotowing, there is also slope flying, as well as bungee and winch launch available too. Something for everyone. Jim does a great job with his property and the people there are terrific to hang with.

Looking at the long range weather forecast, it looks like the rain/sun cycles will be timed about right. Wednesday, November 2 and Thursday, November 3 will be rainy. Friday thru Monday will be sunny and then Tuesday, November 8 will be back to rain.

Typically, the end of the rain is marked by a day of strong wind and the Friday forecast calls for just that, so bring the slope planes! The winds then look very favorable for all types of flying and Monday looks near calm.

The main thing is to be prepared for anything for wild slope to docile thermal and bring clothing for the extremes of wind and cold and layers to adjust as the temperature changes through the day.

Long range forecast now contradicts everything said in post #3...except, bring everything so you can fly in anything!

As we get closer to the event, the forecast is looking better and better. Saturday's snow storm did us the favor of clearing out the sky! Now it is sunny and the forecast calls for sun everyday from now through the event with tempertures for the event in the high 50's to low 60's.

Remember, bring warm clothes and all of your airforce so you will be ready for every condition! The wind forecast has something for everyone over the five day period.

Here is what the weather was like today (10/30/11) here in Western Maryland...what snow?? I wanted to use my skis and wow, the snow was almost all gone by 4:00pm.

This is my Sr. Telemaster doing tow duty with an Easy Glider:

Actually, this field is in Garrett County (far Western Maryland) where they only have two seasons...winter and the 4th of July!

I wanted to use my skis, but the snow was melting so fast that this is all that was still around by 4:00pm.

Forecast is calling for sun all this week and temperatures in the high 50's to low 60's. Looks like the weather window is going to cooperate and give us great flying conditions...totally opposite the long range forecast of two weeks ago!

Bring everything, flying conditions can vary from in your face slope to totally calm. Bring warm clothes too, because the early mornings can be chilly.

One of my favorite memories of the SFF is from the mid-1980's. One chilly morning, the sun came up in a cloudless sky and began heating the backside of the slope (field faces west). I walked around the side of the mountain so that I could hand launch my Olympic II into the lift on the east side . What a blast, 20 minutes flights on a hand launch into that crisp, clear, and quiet morning air.
