Build Log

F-9F Cougar 70mm (the fun way)

Back for more punishment, this time enlarging the ancient Telasco Cougar plans up to a 40" wing span, 42~ish length.
Fiberglass over balsa construction.

For power I've got an HET 6904 spun by an ARC 28-48-1.5 on 5s.
4 lb (or less) target weight.

I've got some Chinese retracts that I've been testing in a foamy F-86 and the mechanism seems to be robust enough for a plane this size.

Been going over the JHH Cougar thread and notice that they placed the fan almost even with the main gear. While the RC Lander foam Coug has the fan a little more to the rear.
I'm going to build the long top hatch like the JHH model and may make some longish fan mounting beams to fine tune the CG.

After the F-105 project this looks like a piece of cake.
It will be a week or so before I can start cutting wood. I've got a 72" Yak on the workbench that a fellow club member cartwheeled and wants repaired.
$$$$

And I've got to build a swing set for my little girl. ...from scratch of course.

I have the same plans, Julian. Mine are 40" WS approx. I moved my fan further back, than yours. I wanted the intake angle less severe and not have the batts between the intakes.

I'll be watching..

Nearby is a Korean War memorial that has an F9F Cougar. Let me know if you need some details of the actual plane.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

I may take you up on that offer Larry.

Claus, I'll bet those drawings would make some nice foam pieces. I'm just too old school, I need my balsa dust. Plus, somewhere there's a tree-hugger I'm aggravating.

Fuzz, you built one form these plans?
I've seen some Panther builds around that had the ducts angled in pretty steep. Fan placement will all turn on the CG.

Nope...I built the original kit back in the 60's for Jetex. I tiled the plans to approx 40" WS a few yrs ago. Have them somewhere in an envelope. Never got around to it(was waiting for lipos to get better).

Some progress on the Cougar!!

Started cutting out the fuse kit this week and had enough parts to glue together.
The templates on the plans were very accurate except for former F7. Way off on the topside, too tall. When I get it framed up to be a little sturdier I'll have to reshape it.

The Boss was upstairs helping me out this afternoon.
Mostly dug around in her Mom's storage areas (I'll pay for that later) ...found a Mardi Gras mask and her old pacifiers among the junk.
