What is the purpose of the horizontal fin?

Fins dont do much to stablize the heli in flight. The verticle fins keep the tail blade touching the ground But What good/purpose does the Horizontal fin do??

A well designed horizontal fin can help the tail stay more level in forward flight. Allowing slightly faster flight, and increased pitch stability.
Many 3D helicopters have such a small fin, its mostly for style points.

Much like adding a horizontal rear wing on a street car, a RC heli will reap the same performance gains.

Fly Safe !!
With most of the vertical fin cut out it serves no aerodynamic purpose but does help prevent blade strike on boom if large enough.

Do you guys have such small cars in the States?

Depends..... In a 3D heli, the fins have little to no purpose.

For FAI/F3C, scale and full-scale they certainly do serve a purpose.

-The Vertical fin improves stability in forward flight... see the weathervane effect.
-The Horizontal fin in F3C/scale and full-scale is much larger than that of 3D helis, it also serves a similar purpose as the horizontal stabilizers in an airplane, in fast forward flight (high collective) it smoothes out odd pitch tendencies.

Basically, these fins (when functional) improve tracking and stability in high collective flight.

They are FAR from useless.

I can not decide which one I like better between these two:

I don't see how the vertical fin has any effect on boom strikes. The small horizontal stab if anything else may only increase the damage caused by a boom strike as it may catch the blade and lead it straight into the boom. I've seen this happen.
