Going through the wires is somewhat ok but if you had hit one of those insulators on the towers, it would have been the 4th of July.

got her done! gotta laterally balance it yet and cover the holes with some lam.. maybe add a scoop or two or three...

I estimate that the power line was at least 138kv to 260kv or higher. It doesn't take much to cause an arc across anything that might be conducting even moist air. The rule of thumb is electricity can arc one inch for every 1000 volts. At 138kv that is more than 10 feet.

If he had hit one of the insulators head on it could have caused an arc to be created to the tower steel.

That would have shut down that circuit and caused a major power blackout.

So yes I do think a foam plane could cause a power outage.

hey paintz

i used a 10x8 (aeronaut) it was a waste of time. the Z is too draggy to use that prop. either use less pitch or a bigger prop. 10x6 will work beautifully.

it is just laminate used for laminating paper documents, like they use at your local Staples or Office Depot. Super super inexpensive and yet strengthens these planes really well. I bought a 250 ft roll online for $35 which is enough to cover 15 or 20 planes.

When a ground fault is detected the line's circuit breaker open and re-close half a second later, if fault is gone (which is likely) then things go back to normal.

I agree. That is the design and practice for most utility electrical distribution systems. The consumers would only get a momentary outage which can still be disruptive to manufacturing plants.

My fear is that while the insulator may not break from the impact, it may crack and break from the arc blast. The conductor would no longer be attached to the tower and could now swing and create another arc if it go too close to the tower or another conductor.

There is a lot of power released in a high voltage fault.

I performed a bench test of my motor to see how many amps it draws at WOT. I am using the following:

Ritewing 1200kv motor
Ritewing 65A ESC
3s 3000mah battery
10 x 5E prop.

I got a reading of about 39 amps which is great. What bothered me was how much the motor's outrunner moved away from the base. It stopped when the retaining c clamp came in contact with the motor frame. My estimate is about 3/32 of an inch or a little over 2 mm.

Is that normal and if not what do I need to do?

Shouldn't be a problem as long as the c clip stays in place if not maybe get a collar with a set screw to lock it in place
