Question

Equivalent Parts (Hobby King) for 3D Hobby Shop Foamie

Hi All,

I just ordered the 3DH-38SLICK-EPP 38" EPP Slick from 3D Hobby Shop and want to buy equivalent parts listed from Hobby King to keep my cost down.

Here's the list,

Power: Eflight Park 400 Outrunner
ESC: Hacker X20 ESC
Servos: Hitec HS-65MG
Prop: 9x4.7 or 10x4.7 SloFly

I priced out parts from the list they sent and the cost is more than the plane so I'm hoping someone on here can recommend equivalent parts from Hobby King or another vendor.

Thanks Y'all
Colin

You may want to check the reviews of the servos. They get a pretty bad rap.

Thank you, I ordered 8 of them just to be safe in case they brake to easily. Not a big loss if they don't work as 8 of these is less $$ than the cost of one that is recommended.

A couple of things I would change. The HXT 900 servos are more than adequate and have a name for themselves. No need for metal gears. The slowfly props wouldn't handle the load that this kind of plane can put on them. The hd or dd series would be much more tolerant.

My apologies... I copied the wrong URL for servos. I meant to suggest the well-known and well-regarded HXT 900!

Thanks for the update. I ordered the previous ones suggested, will they still be good enough or would you suggest ordering these ones also? My order is already being delivered.

Sure, I'd go ahead and use them. and order the HXT900's the next time you order from HK ,as I'm sure there will be a next time. Good idea to read the revues under the products from HK. They don't pull any bones about leaving in the poor revues from customers. I use it all the time when looking for motors, etc. By the way, I buy those servos 10 at a time.

Thanks, I figure as cheap as they are i am still saving $$$$. I got extras just in case my son trashes these ones when he fly's the plane. Appreciate the quick response and you saved me tons.

I have the HK-CS929MG's on my Orion V3 2 meter warmliner and no issues so far. Typical with many HK products is that the first few reviews are bad and the rest 100 are five stars. Many times they get their act together after the first delivery batch.

I believe these servos are actually Corona CS929MG which is a decent cheapish servo. A little bit of slop but that is typical with small metal gear servos. Other than that they have been just fine for more than 50 flights and some pretty rough landings including one crash. The plane is pretty fast and without flaps semi difficult to land.

HXT900 is an excellent and dirt cheap servo. There are even spare gears available for ~0.9$/complete set. Gears strip easily but they are easy and cheap to replace or just thow in a new servo.

One of the big pluses of the HXT 500 and 900s is the strength of the servo gears. They are much thicker than any other servos in their size catagory.

Thank for the great info, I will post after I try these out and let everyone know how they worked. They are going into '38' Slick 3D plane and my son has practiced loads on the sim so hopefully the crashes won't be to hard.

Just to give you an idea of the reliability, they've been in my Zoombi, the same class of plane but a bipe about 30 in. span, for about 5 yrs with different radios. I programmed it into the DX8 about May. Had to put an ail servo about a month later that just quit working. First servo to go. Just checked the time on it since it's been in the DX8 and it has 19 hrs of run time. That's over a 6 month period so figure the actual time over 5 yrs. This is flown through the winter too on skis. Same setup in a Flash 3D, about the same size as yours, about 2 yrs old, with original servos.

That's encouraging to know. if you can fly in the frigid Kingston weather than I should have no issue down here in sunny, warm TX.
