Discuss 711 4 metre glider


Hi,
Has anyone any experience with this glider from FMS?

They were quite popular a few years ago. A friend bought one for less than $150. The fuse is fragile and the wings bend. I did a search and found this and I know there are other threads on this glider

thanks for the reply. I'll poke around the forum and see what i can find.

I saw this glider on ebay and at general hobby. There's a lot of info missing such as what type of servos you need, wiring, can you fit a tow hook, etc..

That's not a thermal glider, it's a slope glider! At least according to the nmbers given. I calculate a wing loading of almost 19 ounces per square foot, and an average chord of only about 6 1/2 inches. So, if I'm not mistaken the Reynolds number will be approximately 110k at that chord in slow flight, and lower at the tips. That's pretty low. If the airfoil does not get quite thin as the chord gets smaller, it may be a problem.

That burst my bubble !! I'm looking for a glider to be towed and search for thermals. Maybe 4m is a bit too big.

Any suggestions - (fiberglass kit preferably).

A high wing loading does not necessarily stop you from thermalling well but it will train you to stop pulling on the elevator

At higher loadings, the model will need to be flown faster but it will still thermal if you, the pilot, are capable.

A high wing loading and small chord will make it difficult to fly but not impossible. It would likely be a bear to winch or hi-start launch but you can get away with a lot with an aerotow launch.

4 meter is not too big for thermals. Usually, the bigger they are the better they fly. I just think it's a little heavy for the narrow wing. A 4 meter with more wing area might be just the ticket.

Unfortunately for you, I'm not familiar with many scale jobs, which I gather is what you want. If it doesn't have to be scale, I'll bet the Super Ava Pro* would be a superb floater, since the old, regular Ava was. There are many thermal duration gliders which are very good in thermals too. For instance, the Supra or the Explorer. (ANd there's a 4 meter Explorer.) Of course, all of these are fine on the winch, too. OTOH, they're all more expensive than the one you mention.

Of those listed, if the larger Ava flies like my old Ava, it will be very easy to fly.

*Does anyone actually make money by flying all these gliders called "Pro"?

I've flown one of them. Slopeflyer33 from here at RCGrous has had a couple. The wingloading is probably up there, but it flew fairly well on the slope.

it flies great for what you pay for. Mine does not like wind over 12mph. It thermals amazingly well! Does also well at slope:

Hi Iflytailies,

Can you tell me what you are using as servos and hardware? Standard servos, mini, slim, etc... Do you have a tow hook installed and where? Center of Gravity also.
