Acc only - no gyro

Hi all, is it possible to fly a tricopter using a accelerometer only , no gyro.
I have just got my tricopter flying nicely in stable mode. I am using the aeroquad minishield with arduino pro mini and the 6dof board which contains the adxl345 acc and itg3200 gyro.

Ok, it was just a thought because I have a couple of spare arduinos and accelerometers.
Thanks
