FMS Douglas A1 Skyraider 750mm

Hello Gents,
This is not an in depth review just my quick take
on the FMS mini Skyraider with the 750mm wingspan.

Even though I'm in a build of my own of a molded fiberglass A1 with a 47inch WS,
I bought this little foamy because mine isn't ready yet and I was really pleased that FMS did their homework on what a Skyraider should look like...unlike Starmax(enough said there)
It's a bit small, but it looks great and is pretty darn accurate.

I picked this up online from I think a Singapore distributor. BananaHobby didn't have them yet. I paid probably twice what they charge.

Model was packed nicely with no transpo damage.

The build is straight forward to the instructions. The only thing I changed was the supplied Deans to a JST for battery.

The only thing to glue is the horizontal stab parts. The molding is very good and the parts line up without difficulty. I glued them on with the main wing bolted in place for visual alignment.

A Turnigy 1000mah 2cell fit perfectly in the battery area of the fuse.
It's tight in there, but everything fits.

Spektrum radio was used and all controls were set to 30% expo.

The CG in the instructions is correct.

I didn't want to break the supplied 3bladed prop on a maiden so I switched it with a GWS 8x6 Slow fly. It's a bit flexible but worked fine.

The maiden as you will see in the video is uneventfull.
Take off is about 5-10 feet...or less
Ithink I gave it two clicks of up trim..that's it.
The plane flies great an has more than enough power.
I flew it mostly at half throttle.
It tracks nicely through loops with no corrections.

Tip stalls were non existent to me.
On landing I kept a liitle extra speed, but it bleeds off quickly on touchdown.
The battery was maybe warm but definitely not hot.

The model seems small but if you keep it close you'll do fine. The wing loading doesn't seem high at all. (I have not done the math on it )
Again just build to the instructions and use EXPOs on the throws.
It is a fun little bird for the cost. I might get another and paint it in a different scheme

nice review.

Do you think flaps would be nice on this A-1E in landing?

Honestly I don't know if it's worth the weight increase. This airplane is really small.

Just got given one from a mates friend who didn't have any luck with it but I'm sure he was in need of a trainer not a slick mini. I have finally arrived at the conclusion that my FMS F4u is beyond repair and along comes this. The corsair was a great belly lander and under arm launches worked well. With gear on it flipped over on grass landings always and got airborne with only 60% power otherwise "exit stage left"!
Reglued the firewall and some cracks around the upper cowl, XT60 and 7060 SF prop from the Corsair and its ready to go.
Can you advise me of the CoG. I will use a 1000mah 3s, same as the F4u and it seems to be about 1/3 back from LE, any thing more precise?
Thanks. Same same as the 1100mm Durafly just smaller and I'm sure quicker.

Foamjets question about flap, just use channel 5 (aux) as other aileron and dial in flaperons, no weight increase for some flap, only trouble is if belly landing it puts more stuff down into the dirt so keep wheels on.

They sell pretty small servos that you could use for flaps

CG is aprox 1 1/2" from leading edge @ fuselage....remember to check it inverted I use 3S1P both 850MAh and 1000Mah lipos with no issues...just shove them as for into the nose as they can go...Enjoy...I set my timer to about 5 mins.

Got mine proper maidened today.

Had a launch attempt last Sunday but it rolled RIGHT (!) from an underhanded launch (unlike my retired F4u) and took an early break to prop, gear mount and required motor bell manipulation. 1000 3s in battery slot gave correct cog, thanks weed.

Repaired and more alert today, it went for left roll on launch but got that under control and had a ball like I used to with the corsair. Quick rolls, powerful elevator and FAST, same as the corsair, but easier landing on grass with gear without the nose over that the corsair would always do. Looks like the gear stays with this beast!

Why does the manual indicate the Cof G is 40mm on the bottom of page 13
yet on Page 18 the diagram shows the CofG is 65mm

who knows they might be a bit different now...I have never flown with a 2 cell lipo ... and with the stock 3 bladed prop & a 3 cell ... Mine flies MUCH faster than the 1 in the video above

Very valid question, I didn't see anyone answering it , can anyone advise what's the correct CG position for this plane?

Well tried to fly mine this morning- it taxi well and the tail lifted off the ground, I increased power slightly and it went up in the air and drove to the left side and broke the props off!!!!

I was I have to order all new props.. the problem was I was too slow on the take off and a slight wind gust made it veer off to the left into the grass.

ordered two new props for now...
