Build Log
72" Mono Wood Frame
I am currently looking into building a 72" mono wood frame boat. I have sent the plans to a laser cutter to see what it would cost to get the frame cut out that way instead of cutting it out myself.
Any suggestions on what size motor this would take electric? |

Hi Mtrchs,
If a petrol engine isn't an option, I would size the hull down to 40"max, to avoid the need to take a second mortgage to be able to power a 72"hull electrically... Even at 40" you may have to sell one of your children to be able to go fast enough. Just kidding..., (about the kids, not the mortgage), as powering a large monohull to run (very) fast electrically can get very expensive. Regards, Jan. |

It doesn't have to run very fast. But you think it is best to leave this one with a G23?

I have scaled the boat down 50% to a 36" boat, I have seen a lot of people running the panther? motors. Are these any good and what size would be good for a 36" mono?

Hi Mtrchs,
A 72"boat will be powered much more economically with a gasser, electric this would cost you bout the equivalent of two, maybe three G23's. The 'Panther' you're referring to are the Leopard motors, for 36" I'd go for a 3674, or one of the larger Ø 40 mm versions, running on 6-8 S. The KV selected depends on the Voltage you choose to run on. I'm sure one of the 'local' guys can steer you in the right direction as to what to get where. Regards, Jan. |

I worked on the frame pieces a little more today, started cutting the lightening holes in each framer. The router I bought threw sawdust all over the garage. My daughter came under my arm as I was cutting and got a piece in her eye. Her eye is all red and so we hit Home Depot last night for a pair of safety glasses. I knew better but didn't see her coming, lesson learned by both of us.
I am also considering sheeting the bottom of the boat with 3/32 balsa and then covering it with medium weight fiberglass. I will get some more pictures up soon. |

pompebled what speed differences are there between 6cells, 7cells, or 8cells?

I also ordered a bunch of stuff from hobbyking last night for the boat.

Even that twin set-up would cost you less than equivalent power in electric, run as long as there is fuel in the tank and refuelling is a lot faster than recharging Lipo. Plus you get the realistic sound |
