Help!
Good Esc & Futaba servo's to go with futaba 401Gyro & S9254 tail servo
Hi all, Ive just ordered a Futaba 401 Gyro with a S9254 tail servo for my first HK450 V2 Heli and i was hoping if some of you guys could recommend some good Futaba servo's and Esc to go with them and to finish the electronics off? Im new to the hobby as a few of you guys know so im still learning and need as much advice as i can get!!! I would like to keep all the servo's and gyro the same make so i know they will run together ok with no glitches and I would also appreciate it if you could also recommend a good transmitter that would suite all the electronics that i will be buying!!! Im leaning towards the spectrum Dx6i as its about my price range but is there any other good transmitters out there to be recommended? I want to make sure i buy things that are highly recomended and tested and a few members have said that its best to buy better electronics rather than make the mistake of going cheap and regrettng it later when ive had a crash because i didnt buy anything that was good in the first place!!! Well many thanks for looking at my thread and i look forward to any replies!!! Have a good one.

Not too many people use futaba micro servos for 450 size helis, by far the most popular brand name servos would be the hitec 65mg/hb. ESC are typically the stock align or castle creations. The only esc's futaba makes are for cars as well.
While some people do use the 9254 for 450 size it is a bit large, most use a mini size like the 9650/9257 or JR 3500. |

Well druss ive done a lot of research and quite a lot of members use the 9254 on a 450and as it comes with the 401 combo im sure there be perfect together. I did make a mistake by saying i want the Esc to be by Futaba but i will probably go with an align but i wanted to see what other members would advice. As for the servo's i want to keep them all the same make as im sure from my RC nitro and electric experience its better to have the same make than to mix and match with different servo's. I will probably go with the 9257 as they seem the best bet so far and all i need to do is look out for a good Esc once i have made my mind up? I should have all the electronics finished by the first week of october and it all upgraded and ready to fly by the week after that. Cant wait to see it completed but ive got a lot of sim practice before i even consider flying it plus a lot of building as well!!! I also want to get a fuselage as im not going to be doing any 3D flying but that will come much later when im happy with my setup!!!

Completely up to you... but... out of all the 450's I've seen in person, including my own 6 that I've owned, none of them use a standard servo for the tail. Take a cruise though youtube and see how many use a standard vs mini servo on the tail... You just don't need the torque of a standard servo for 450 size heli and you end up with balance issues from using such a large servo. Again... up to you.
I'm not sure what you mean by choosing the 9257 as the servo though, did you mean the cyclic servos? since the 9257 a mini and the 450 only uses micro. Again, take a look at the trex 450 threads (not clone threads) and you'll find the hitec 65 as the most used seros for this class. The align 410's are garbage and the mks are pretty expensive. I'm not sure if you're problem is just with me or not but you keep asking questions then bashing the advice you get... I've owned or currently own, over 30 different helicopters, if you think that advice is bad then I'm more than happy to ignore your threads in the future. |

Look druss i have no problem with you at all mate it seems like your the one who grinds down on every thread i leave!!! I have spoken to a load of members on helifreaks,RC Groups,RC Tech and not one member has come accross like you do!!! maybe its your people skills or lack off but im a very easy person who has other hobbys and yet i have never meet a member who replies the way you do!!!! Also the reason why i am going to use the 9254 is because it comes with the 401 combo that ive bought and if it was that bad to use why hasnt any other member mentioned it to me or say thats what they use? who knows maybe you know more because you have 30 different heli's!!!! Its a learning curve druss and if you was to get into hobbys that i know best i certainly wouldnt go about giving advice like you do!!! Its not rocket science druss its Rc helicopters!!!!!

The 9257 for cyclic, is way to big, and its gearing is better suited to be a tail servo. |

Roto rob im using it for the tail servo mate not for the cylic as it wont fit as you know!!! As for the size yes it is abit bigger than what most people use but i have been told that it can be used with no probs at all and im sure a small bit of extra weight isnt going to make that much difference!!!

I do agree with you roto and the reason why im adding it first is because people say you crash all the time and ruin servos when you first start so having a better harder servo at the back should help me out abit and not brake so easy even though im not planning on crashing much any way and im not going to be flying higher than my waist intill ive mastered Phoenix flight sim and im confident enough to go higher without the chance of crashing!!!lol And the other reason is because ive managed to buy a brand new futaba 401 combo set thats not been used with all the box plus content and warranty card from a guy for less than half the price off any were else and he lives in the UK so it worked out good for me. Plus i could just trade it for the 9257. Either way im happy with what ive bought and ive seen it work so im on to the next things i need to get my 450 completed and thats why i left this thread in the first place to get advice about the rest of the servo's i will need and a good Esc to use!!! Cheers mate

The only thing the 9254 will give you is more weight at the tail, and as a newbie getting the balance right is gonna be a challenge, mainly because this heli was designed for a smaller servo (unlike the older 450's).
I also got a GY401/9254 combo, and was gonna go your route... but after much research I decided against it and got myself a 9257 (saved the 9254 and now running it on my .50). This was a little over a year ago when I was just starting out... If you go with a CF rod for your tail, you will not strip any gears, not in the tail servo at least. I have tanked my 450 Pro many times, and my 9257 is still performing like it was when I got it. Sure, you can run with that servo... but getting it installed is gonna be a headache for you, and since you are just starting out you want the least amount of headaches. IMHO, either sell/trade the servo and get a 9257, or keep it and save it for a bigger heli in the future and still get a 9257 for the tail. Why didn’t you order the GY401/9257 combo? |

Many thanks for the advice vicovaludemero. The reason im getting that combo is because a member on another forum was selling it and quite a few members suggested buying from members who are selling from the forums as you can get a good bargin and you will get a better deal if you just wait about for the right stuff to turn up instead of buying brand new from the web shops. Ive seen plenty of photos and its totaly 100% brand new and never been used. He is only selling it because he bought them at the same time he bought he's Century Helicopter kit so he doesnt need to use them now. Ive bought loads of stuff off the net as im also into Vintage and 40th Ann actionman and 1/6th scale military figures plus RC Nitro cars and other hobbys so i know my way around when it comes to dealing with sales on forums. Its a great deal even if the sero is to big and i bought it for a great price and far better than anywere else i have seen and ive looked about for ages and im every heli shop you can find!!! plus like you said i can either use it or trade with it And as for trying to make it fit thats a doddle for me mate as ive been modding all sorts of models over the years so thats no probs with me. Well once again thanks for the advice its much appreciated!!!

I will be removing them roto so thats not going to be a problem. Ive got a few align upgrades on there way as well so it wont be a full HK heli and as i want a fuselage to go on it im also going to get a 4 or 5 blade rotor head to match the correct model i want to buy.
