Sad Aviation news today guys....

Jimmy Leeward, Pilot of a P51 Mustang "Galloping Ghost" died today at the Reno Air Races when his plane hit the lower box seat area along the flight line. A large number of people have been taken to local hospitals.

Hope for the best and say a prayer for all the families involved in today's tragic event.

How sad, for many reasons.

I had friends with their seven and eight year boys on their way there. I am glad they were running late. We had a panicked phone call to them to make sure they were o/k.
Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone.

Rest in peace Jimmy

I met Jimmy years ago when i lived in Reno and attended the nearby Job Corps. We talked for about forty minutes on World War 2 aircraft and the Mustang. Great man who will be missed. My thoughts go out to everyone who was injured, the families of the dead and to anyone who witnessed the crash. Jimmy and the Galloping Ghost are now flying Gods Dawn Patrol with all the rest of the great pilots.

Rest in peace my friend

I wasn't there today. I was on my way up there after work. I usually go and catch the last few races from the free end of the runway but heard the news asking everyone to just go home. I did get a text from a fellow RCGer who works up there with his dad. He said they are all OK.

Got to agree with Hutch. Not much else to be said right now. Hard to imagine what went so wrong that such a veteran pilot and racer lost control of his aircraft like that. My condolences to all who perished or were injured, all their friends and families, and to the aviation racing community on the loss of this renowned pilot and his aircraft.

I don't mean to trivialize the death of Jimmy Leeward or the loss of the Galloping Ghost, but the real tragedy is that spectators were killed and injured. This is the first time in the 48 year history of the Reno Air Races that that's happened. Prior to today only race pilots and a wing walker have been hurt or killed.

Our RC friend BOB MARTIN was working pylon #1 as that stations competition judge. I left him a voicemail and another friend sent him an email to check in. No word back yet but im sure he is ok being located away from the crash.

I've been at the Reno races and its a spectacular event and i would still highly recommend all to take the trip and see someday. Its just so sad it had this incident involving spectators for the very first time in its long history.

Pray for the families tonight... Eric
