Sorry for being so brief earlier, been a bit busy...... there has been a bit of progress, we had a break in the weather with a few nice days in a row and acceptable humidity. Tim came up on Saturday and sprayed the wingtip plugs with Duratec (surface coat). Everything went really well in that regard, Tim did a great job. I've spent the last few days building the edges to mould the backing and a few other minor tasks getting ready to complete the moulds. I'll post some pics shortly.

I was planning to start laying up the mould backing today or tomorrow but found today I don't have enough fibreglass to complete the job, so another couple of days delay while that gets delivered.

I'll be moulding all four wingtip moulds in parallel, so hopefully if all goes to plan I should have the wingtip moulds finished in a little over a week .

Glad you got some sun out to do a bit more done mate.
Just need a fuse mold to go with those wing tip molds and you'll have a great 60"er too.

Wingtip Moulds - Surface Coat

Some progress finally. With months of almost constant rain here we finally got a few dry days in a row to spray the wingtip surface coat. Timbuck made the long drive north (3 hrs) to my place to help, well when I say help out I really mean do it for me.... We're using Duratec, a spray on Vinylester based surface coat that's nice and hard yet still sands and polishes up to a high gloss shine.

The plugs were polished with 6 coats of TR wax and PVA was used in some areas around the alignment blocks, wing joiners, and the filler in the trough around the edges of the mould - basically anywhere that looked like trouble when it came time to release. The wing surface itself is wax only.

Spraying the Duratec went smoothly, infact everything went exactly as hoped. The Duratec dries fast - you have at most 15mins to spray each coat then clean the gun before it starts to harden. It was 30 deg C the day we sprayed it so we probably only had about 10mins to be safe. The only hiccup of the day came when we were standing around blabbing and forgot to watch the time, and the Duratec started to harden in the gun. Not a big problem but it did take 30 or 40 min to clean the gun.... Including a few "extra" parts left over when it was put back together the first time, thankfully we figured out where everything went after a second attempt.

A couple of mist coats were applied, then four heavy coats with a little extra around the LE and joiner troughs, then two coats of the Duratec primer, which is supposed to promote adhesion to epoxy. There's not a lot more to say about spraying the Duratec really, except to say Tim did a great job and his help is really appreciated! It was a fairly long day, with lots of time spent standing around outside waiting for each coat to harden and escaping the smell. Thankfully Duratec is basically Vinylester resin so it really stinks but isn't too bad for you (at least compared to some of the other chemicals we use).

PS Apologies for crap photos, I think I got some wax on the camera lens.
