Here is some cockpit art...I don't have the plans so you might have to resize it to fit the plane.

I have returned from Town with 5 sheets of Pink 1/2" OC foam.
I took note of the R-tech foam which was ALL covered with an aluminum skin on one side. thats both at Lowes and HoDep! I also got the Heft of R-tech and see WHY Otto reinforced it with Dowels. It's A LOT lighter ( read in weaker) than the Pink sheets that I purchased. While I was at it I also grabbed a couple of bottles of GG-the 2 oz white fast cure stuff. The "help" at Lowes was USELESS as they HAVE 3/4 Dow Blue but said ... OH No Dow doesnet MAKE 1/2" , see look here. To which I replied ... It's on the NET in several places , and well, thanks anyway. Lowes, localy, has NEVER EVER been willing to get the foam that I want. I had to drive to a different Lowes 80 miles away ( ONE WAY) to get FFF. A N Y W A Y !!! I should have enough for 10 orders. I have given up on BLUE this side of the Cascades, maybe even the Rockys or or or even the Mississippi !!! AAARGH ! |

I always wanted an H-4 but until fooling around with R-Tech I didn't see where I'd get the time to build. This is a fast way to build and it was fun figuring out the prop slot and floatation.

R-TECH Foam
Its interesting that So. Cal. seems to be one of the few places with R-Tech laminated with film on both sides. I have several threads and have watched the discussion on foam and availability unwind. I had pretty much been away from the hobby since 1979 and at that time was a fairly good builder and highly ranked pattern competitor. What has interested me in the hobby this time around are all the new technologies and materials available for use. When you look through the mindset of balsa, plywood and tuned pipes at foam and electric it was a strange new world.
I like to think I have an open mind and never comment unless I have personal experience. I finally got my hands on some pink and blu cor foam; the blu-cor was over 5 years old so I assume it is the better type. My background includes structural and aeronautical engineering; and in design I am always balancing strenght vs. weight for durability and performance. My F-15 and YF airframes came out at 1 lb 3oz and 1 lb 4 oz with a very rugged/cheap construction approach. After playing with the blu and pink I know that they would produce heavier airframes without dowels. For these larger foamies, my first choice at the moment would be 9mm Depron and carbon where required; my second choice for weigh/strengh and expense would be the R-TECH/dowel/hardwood construction and third would be blu-cor or pink. The R-TECH has to be hand cut and you go through a lot of blades, finishing the edges with packing tape takes some time and trying new building techniques creates a learning curve but when finished you have a platform that is lighter and can be painted with any spray paint like the HD Rustolem I use. I encourage those that like to try a new approach to take a shot. You may find that you like it. |

Well , I have returned from the Field this time !
Plenty of roll and lots of pitch authority ( I gotta tame it down a bit ) Easily controllable and predictable. It's an F-22 whadyaexpect ??? Two great flights with one caveat ! Otto was RIGHT regarding PUSHING my SK3542-1000 ! I never got past 5 cells ! :-((( AKA shoulda stuck with 4 cells :-( I'm hear to tell ya, with my Slick stuff on the bottom and 5 cells It practically Jumped out of the weeds ! I never really pushed it except take off and an occasional Vertical zoom. On landing the batteries were Kewel and the esc was ok but the motor was Cruntchy ! Home side disassembly shows that it's a multi strand type wind ! and I'm missing a few strands ! For those who have NOT tried winding their own motors, what that means is ... You can pack MORE winds of an equivalent multi wire bundle that a Single strand of larger wire. Basically IT all Lays Flatter in the slots ! I guess the next thing to try is my previously mentioned Electric tug motor the 4250-700 . Now to go find my old winding data and see if I have enough wire for a repair ! Although at todays prices it's almost a moot issue. C U L8r Bob |
