Giant Foamie Home Depot YF-22

Hi all. After my success with my Home Depot F-15 I realized I still had enough material to build something else. Bob Nietzke recommended doing an F-22. I looked at the F-22 and YF-22 and decided the YF would provide a better balance of roll and pitch from elevons. Bob's guidance was right on. This is one fine flying aircraft. I have a lot of photos and have plans on the way but first the video from this morning.

New updated video, 11/14/2011. Enjoy.

Pictures, pictures, pictures

I added photos of the YF in the backseat of a standard sedan. Here are some painted and unpainted pictures of the finished model.
I've added plans and parts in this post so that you don't have to look for them in the thread. Best
CAUTION: Do not put standard rudders on this plane. For details see post #275.

Build pictures

Here are the primary build pictures. We had a major power outtage in San Diego the night I glued the foam together, so no pictures of sides glued to wing and matting of skeleton to wing.

I've never used fanfold, this is R-Tech 1/2" insulation foam. A beaded type foam covered with a thin plastic. I use Gorilla glue to do joints and a healthy use of clear packing tape to finish all edges.

The power system generates 5 lbs of static thrust which is more than enough. Mine is an old Scorpion 3026 kv990, APC 10x7 prop, 60 amp esc and 4s5000mah battery.

The trick to using R-Tech is to keep the knife blade fresh. I go through 5 to 6 blades in my box cutter during a build.

And !!!
I have done plans for Otto.
After he approves them he may put them up here as well.

I have some OC Pink at 1/2" and may cut a set of parts tomorrow, but ...
I'm going to try to find some 1/2" DOW blue foam board at the local Lumber yards.
I know my Lowes has the stuff that Otto used.

Take OFF by Sliding on ground is a great Idea IMHO !
It worked for the Polaris and for Vleisie's Drongo and SeaDart designs too.

I'm cutting mine RIGHT NOW ! :-)

edit later:

OK I'm done now and they have been removed from the
CNC and brought into my building room.

See pic

I squeezed everything up on my OC Pink Foam 1/2" sheet
so I could get more efficiency from the material.

As a consequence the WING or top view was divided into 5 parts.
Everything else is per the plans. ( which will be available later )

I'm doing my own build to check everything out.

And I must fully recheck the PLY parts.

Meanwhile, Otto is probably still eating ICE CREAM in celebration of a successful flight
a because of the Power outage !

More L8r

Plans for the Giant Foamie YF-22 (beta version)

Bob Neitzke has been working with me on getting some good plans together. Unlike the F-15, this build has quite a few angles to deal with so please consider the following plans a beta version. We'll release a better set as they evolve and Bob puts further tweeks to the design. I've included my original pencil drawing that Bob is working with also. It took me a total of 20 hours to build and it is a fun build that is rewarded with a fine flying aircraft. Best.

Too busy !
I wasn't even thinking about this project about a week or so ago !

Then One Thing led to another and I'm need deep in Foam Balsa and Glue again !

I thought , hey, this guy Otto needs so CAD help. He's got a kind of a kewel idea.

Then you all chimed in and let him KNOW it was a kewel Idea.
Next thing I know ... the pressure is on !

Actually No Complaints, its our Hobby ! :-)

I have the Top view parts all glues up and the elevons hinged
and I'm working on the Wood parts this afternoon and PM.

Time for dinner

Do you mix the Gorilla glue with water prior to application, or do you dampen the foam before applying?

I also am trying to use it as much as possible on this build.
I'm not mixing it with anything and still it foams too much IMHO.

I am trying to be as sparing and stingy with it to lower the foaming and waste.

With this stuff the adage "Too much is not enough" doesn't work at all.

On odd occasions I have tried a squirt/Mist of Windex
prior to use of this and other PU glues like the yellow stuff.
For Me, It either foams a bunch or makes a mess.
