ULTIMATE BIPLANE - Another Meat Tray (Depron) Project.

SteveC has converted a "and now" into a Ultimate Biplane that looks real great. So great that I have to have one. He has posted a drawing on the Pitts thread and I hope he will put it on here. His has about a 27" wingspan....I think I'll try one with a 22" wingspan. He has already flown his version without the foam body and reported that it flies well so if you use his dimensions you know it will work. Mine are always a thrill

So get out your hot wire gun, the exacto blades, and lets start building.

Hi guys,

Here is the Ultimate Bipe in progess.
I weighed it and so far the airframe with servos 4.1 oz.
The wings were an experiment for my "and_now" stik, it flew awesome with the stik fuselage.

Steve

Here is a picture of the first stik version;

Steve,

Your 4.1oz measurement is impressive.

Can you list the components you used please?

Here is a picture of how it looks so far.
This time I'm using 4 channel, full house control.
Everything is made of Walmart's depron sturdyboard with the paper removed.
I expect it to fly even better than the stik version.
The stick version is using the "lil hornet" mg1 motor/brass tube setup and flew fully aerobatic.
With this one I thought I would step up to a speed 400 for even better aerobatics and maybe get into the foamy scratch built contest.
What do you guys think about the speed 400?
Too much? Too heavy? Just right?
I got the idea from david_dewit of Australia who uses a 400 in his "tiny"
With the MG1 motor and battery I expect it to weight right around 10 oz.
I haven't weighed the speed 400 and battery yet.

Here is how it looks so far:

Greg,
I'm using GWS pico std's for the rudder/elevator and a pico BB for the aileron servo.
If I stick with the MG1 I'll be using a little Greatplanes 5a esc that I love.
I'll be using CC's pixie 14 if I go with my speed 400.
I'll probably be using a stripped down hitec 555 for the receiver.
I have been using a GWS RP4 but the range is too limiting for even the stik version I'm flying.

I have been asked for plans so I thought I would give it a shot.
I have found a new appreciation and respect for the people who make plans!
So far all I have are a drawing and the dimensions using adobe illustrator.
These are not to scale so if you want to use it you will need to get out a straight edge and pencil and make the patterns using the dimensions given, or try your own.
I'm sure there are much more qualified people than me out there, so any input is greatly appreciated.
There is more wing area than scale and the fuselage width is tapered toward the nose.
The nose is longer than scale, and will likely be shortened, I left it long in case I need to drastically correct the CG.

Here is a screenshot so far:

Now we're C O O K I N

I'm debating on the wing chord.....22x4, 22x5, 22x6?????
That's 8.18, 6.54, and 5.45 oz/sq ft. I think the 6.54oz/sq ft might not be bad. Comments???? Looks like Steve's plane is in the 4oz/sqft range, maybe I'm thinking too small...hmmmmm.
Are there any guidlines for biplane wingspan and chord relationships?? Both the Pitts and Ultimate Biplane have skinny wings in the "real" versions.

Thanks for the feedback.....I think the new one will work

The tail feather and wing patterns have been removed because they are being revised to a larger size.

OK, now it's working (I hope). I found the yahoo page that permits it to be viewed by the public.

jojo, can you access this picture file? http://photos.yahoo.com/hoppyfl

Since my home page is maxed out, this is an easy way to post the templates.

Steve, is that Windows XP you got there? What do you think of it so far?

(Sorry, I know it's a bit off topic)
