I'm not a Rick Perry fan ( I like Ron Paul a little better, but not much.) In the early days there was no functional Republican Party in Texas. It was all decided by the Democratic Primary. (Up into the 1920's blacks were not allowed to vote in the Democratic Primary, but could vote in the General Election, after everything was decided.) It is said that Perry was a conservative Democrat. His support of Al Gore was against Dennis Kucinich.
