100a castle creations with a cc bec 10a for rx power. found using the separate bec helped the gear operate solid and not hand up since i use a jp retract board that senses amp draw to stop direction on the gear. ample power is needed. but they function perfect

Any of my big models I use either an external bec or a rx battery pack. Cheap insurance.

I can't really say anything about the ESC/BEC that came stock with my Ferocious Frankie, because I replaced it with a 100A Castle Creations ESC and external 20A CC BEC Pro from day one, for my peace of mind in knowing that I had only branded components in this model; but after following this thread for years, I conclude that it was perhaps an unnecessary move, due to the fact that there isn't that many reports from people having had issues with electronics. I was under the impression that the 1700mm P-51 already has a separate external bec that supplies the RX and servos its power. Well that's how it is in mine Ferocious Frankie. Either way it's a smart idea with the big planes.

Yes, the Frankie does come stock with a ZTW 85a esc with an external bec. I upgraded my motor and esc.

I take it the 85 amp 'FMS' esc is made by ZTW then? When the time comes to improve performance, mine will get a 125amp esc like you did. Not sure what bec size is sufficient and recommended though.

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...ostcount=10202 The only thing I would add to that (long) post is that I now have more experience directly comparing ESC logs between static versus flying, on the same plane with the same prop. The current in a static test is always WAY more than flying. It is hard to compare unless you make exactly the same throttle movements throughout the two tests. And of course the airframe, the prop, the control movements all play a role. But generally speaking, I find the current in a static test is something like 150% to 200% of what you see in the air on a typical flight, all else being equal. So if you size the ESC by running a static test and then adding margin on top of that, you are probably exceeding your needs. If I see 85A in a static test, to me that means an 85A ESC is enough. You don't need to add "margin" because the margin is already included in the fact that you measured it static. The reason for all this is fairly obvious - a prop doing 8000rpm in still air is a much higher load on the motor versus the same prop doing 8000rpm in air that is whistling by at 60mph. Obviously it depends on pitch, speed, etc, but moving air will always represent a much lower load than still air. |

Really good information you've provided Gringo, thanks for supplying us with it. I'd be curious if you were to perform the same tests but with the zip tie mod done with the props. After reading the vast majority of this thread, it was a quick decision to do the zip tie mod, actually I doubled the zip ties for an even more aggressive prop pitch since the motor is the stock 300kv. Anyway, thanks for the info.
TomT, you're going to go crazy awaiting spring with this beautiful Ferocious Frankie. At least you'll have plenty of time putting it together and adjusting the control surfaces. |

Careful with the newer gecko esc's. They have firmware issues. Dan |
