HobbyKing Pitts EPP-CF
HK Budget EPP foam Pitts Biplane. HobbyKing Pitts EPP-CF (Build, review, demo).
Out of the box: Pretty impressive for the price, especially having the motor included. I have a 1000kva motor I'd like to try at some stage with a larger prop for better efficiency. The wings are airfoils not flat profile, which is excellent and the EPP is fairly stiff. BUILD: Took me around 5 hours to build. Definitely need to free up the control surfaces. The 3 balsa pieces that are the vertical supports between the wings are week, advise tracing them out in case you need to replace them at some stage. Better still replace them with EPP. Build was fairly strait forward and manual was actually pretty helpful. The last thing to fit was the battery to get the CG correct. I wanted to stay light for vertical performance so used a 1000mah 3S 20C battery, gives me around 10 minutes flight time. The manuals CG location worked fine. I had to put the battery fairly forward to achieve the CG with a 1000mah. FLIGHT REPORT: Firstly, all my experience is on flying wings (which I'm confident on). Being a Bi-plane, it needs a little bit of rudder for good turns, still learning rudder control. The standard motor and 8" prop was fine with beyond vertical performance. Very capable at slow flying. Played around with some knife edge and hover the plane is capable of both (the pilot needs practice). OVERALL: Recommended However Its not overly tough considering its EPP, which is one of the main reasons I went for this model. The EPP is plenty tough, its the bi-plane configuration of balsa and CF supports that are the weak points. Fine if you don't intend to crash at all, but I'm used to combat wings and tend to push my limits, consequently dish out some aircraft punishment. If you want to bullet proof it a bit, I would look at replacing at least the balsa with EPP in the build. I have broken mine now, will look at converting to mid single wing 3D plane and make a light flying wing out of the left over top wing. Done and picture is up now. I have some video I must edit and upload when I get the time. Product link Battery Build - Demo + Flying wing comparison flight

Cool. I saw the video on youtube and finally found you're blog! I love the golden age looks of the pitts. It's a classic. Would you say that this could be able to do mild 3D menuvers like harriers and rolling circles? I bought a UMX 4-site and am completely dissapointed with it. No airfoil means easy stall, and it has to be flown fast to do 3D. I was looking for a small, airfoiled bipe that I can fly indoors and out. Is this the one I sould be looking at?

Pros: Definitely 3D capable with stock motor and light 1000mah 3S. slow fly is great even gliding. Bi planes handling is weird though, if your use to it that's not a prob. It's actually pretty fast when you throttle up to.
Cons: I liked that this plane was durable EPP, however, the bi wing configuration makes the plane easily damaged on crashes, even fairly light ones. I've damaged mine in a crash that a standard EPP 3D plane would have probably survived with little to no damage. I will convert my pitts to a single mid wing 3D plane at a later stage as I can see way to many rebuilds occuring as a bi-plane. If your not likely to crash then it's a good choice. Or, dump the balsa supports and replace with EPP foam for better durability. |
