New winch drum for Ford longshaft motor

I'm in the final steps of making another winch drum like the one in the pictures. It'll fit a Ford longshaft motor with the standard shaft length. I'll include a piece of flat serpentine belt to go with the drum.

Price is $165 plus USPS priority mail shipping and insurance from ZIP 31757.

I ONLY accept United States Postal money orders, the kind you get at the post office. I can cash those when I ship the package, so there's no delay waiting for something to clear the bank.

I can build drums to any configuration, so let me know if you need something different.

What is the advantage of using a flat belt over a v-belt?

Flat belts are easier to work with. You can trim away the ribbing, and wrap the belt around a piece of brass tube to make a strong connection to your brake arm or anchor bolt. The rubber bonds easily with CA, but it's best to wrap the connection with light twine saturated with CA for reinforcement.

Flat belts are also less prone to wandering and dragging on the drum during the launch. All the flexing is in one direction, so they don't bend to the side easily.

I have a ready source of free used serviceable flat belts. I have to buy V-belts.

It's easier to machine the flat braking surface on the end cap. I can machine an end cap for a V-belt, if that's what you want, though.

Roger-

How about a drum that will accept a bearing on the outside end??

I'd like to build a unit similar essentially to this winch arrangement (but like the idea of your flat belt brake)-

Thanks,
Target

I've got this drum which came off the Briggs winch I recently took apart.

It's got bearings on both ends, but I can modify it or make new parts as needed. I'll remove the clutch drive rotor (the piece with the circular slots in second photo). I can leave a bearing in whichever end you want, and put a shaft adapter to fit your motor and drive arrangement on either end.

Does that look like something that would work? Make me a sketch of what you have in mind and what your motor shaft looks like (if it's not a FLS), and I'll see what I need to do.

I'd prefer not to build something larger than six inches in diameter, but I can manage it if you insist. The drum in the pictures is 5-7/8" in diameter and 5-1/4" wide with a 2" hub. That should be plenty of line volume. I can shorten the hub if necessary, too.

Hi-
That is a really interesting drum.
I will confess that I don't have even one piece yet to
make my own winch, but I would really prefer to stick to a know design.
I figure if I use the same motor, same or nearly the same drum dimensions, then
there will be no question of performance.
That being said, slightly smaller end plates wouldn't hurt my feelings any, since
the drum is never filled on the winch we use.

I will send you an email with more precise info, and maybe detailed pics after the
weekend, if that works for you.

There are a few things that have been modified since that winch in the link was built
originally. Maybe you could save me and yourself some minor headaches.

R,
Target
