Micro Skeleton(sorta) F-22 Jet

This is my first attempted at a micro 1S plane, so I'm pretty excited. Initially was 36 grams...and then I skeletonized it to 32 grams (you won't believe how much better it flies with just 4 grams off)- This micro version flew so well, I thought I'd share...

The plans came from the scratchbuild section on rcgroups here:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=740049

Here's the electronics (13 grams total)
3.1 gram brushless motor
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idproduct=9664

2.5 gram orange RX

HobbyKing XP 3A 1S 0.7g Brushless Speed Controller
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=9667

zippy 1S 100mah Lipo

2x HobbyKing Ultra Micro Servo 1.7g for 3D Flight
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=11737

if you want to see the electronics testing, see here:
Display/Testing of Micro Electronics for Indoor/Micro plane (2 min 3 sec)

Flight video to follow within the next few days (that is if I can convince my 9 year old to film for me)

They were both sticky (slow) when new. I found out the shaft had some sort of residue that hampered with movement- a bit of light machine oil dabbed on the screw quickly got the servos working well.

if you watch the vid, you'll notice a lot of oil drips on the paper- that was from trying to put oil on the screws and kinda a quirky task since the space to get to the screw is so small.

After that, the servos work very well- I am surprised and baffled at how precise they are and more than enough power for my little F-22 rather large elevons.

I was trying to figure that out also, doesn't look like your typical prop.

thanks guys- it's actually just a good old GWS 3x2 prop. amp draw at WOT is a tad below 1amp and with 100mah I get 3-5 mins of flight with throttle management. Thrust is just right to get it moving along at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle at a nice 3mph. WOT probably gets me to about 5mph...

Very nice. I'm another one that's been thinking about something like this. The bigger ones are fun. I figure that this small one is more fun. Seeing this moves it up on my priority list.

Is is depron. How thick and what is the wing span on this guy.

Thank You. The nice thing about the small ones is you can fly it almost anywhere. After I get it trimmed out I should be able to fly it in my front yard or at work. The purpose was really something I can fly in front of my building at work...or perhaps in the parking lot.

I also tried successfully flying at night in a parking lot with just plain old parking lot lights...it's slow and all white so no trouble seeing at all.

plane is 13" wingspan and made from dollar tree foam (foamboard),...not sure the exact thickness, but it is fairly thin,...probably a tad thicker than 1/8 inches...

the foam board is about 5mm thick. its also pretty heavy, you could probably do a lighter version with 3mm depron.

F-22 micro short video

As promised, I finally got a video- I was not able to convince by daughter to get up at 6am to go shoot, so I ended up using a flycam2 mounted on my head again. Sorry vid quality is not so good, but enough to see how the plane does.

Shot around 7am with wind about 1-2 mph. Maiden flight with the new skeleton was done a few flights prior to this vid to trim out the plane. Unfortunately, that took too long and I ran out of juice at the 1 min mark.

I think I still have to work a bit on cg...with the plane skeletonized, it was very nose heavy. I moved the Lipo as far back as possible, but still seems a bit nose heavy.

anyways...here it is:

32 gram skeleton Micro F-22 jet ran out of juice and crashed (2 min 15 sec)

Sorry, I did not weigh dry weight of airframe...but what I do know is that all the electronics were 13 grams. I would add another 2-3 grams for control rods, motor mount, tape...etc. that would make it 16 grams- Airframe then would be approximately 16 grams, give or take 1-2 grams.
