edfs in snow


It is snowing .................... what is the lowest temp anyone has flown EDF

cold flying


I've done it in the teens b4...isnt alot of fun though like anything else when it's cold.......right conditons though wil put your plane alot farther away then where you think it would have landed..plane without gear hanging down like sledding...unless it's too fluffy then you get full too fast..and it's water so beware

Last winter I regularily flew my Bill Grigg's ElectroScreamer, a hand-launched, high wing plane with the fan on top of the wing.

It would ROSnow, resulting in some of the most scale like take offs I have ever experienced. If I remember correctly the lowest temperature was in the mid teens.

The low temp made no difference to the plane.

Landing on snow was no different than landing on grass except the plane would slide a little more.

Just keep the batteries warm until use

Cold dry weather will actually improve your performance - more power will be drawn and stallspeed will decrease. Top speed wont be affected much as drag increase.

All this is due to the denser air.
Besides - the patt.back are great as handwarmers....

Battery life as duration or life expectancy?

Duration - maybe slightly less as denser air means more work which equal more amps - nothing huge but a little bit.
The motor tries to spin the rotor just as fast as before.

The cells would most likely be more comfortanle with the colder ambient temp. as it will not heat up as much as usual and it will cool down faster and come off the charger less hot.

Personally I like 70-80degF.

My ElectroSceamer has a flat bottom, no LG.

I added a 1/2" high x 1/16" thick x 6" long 'skid' to the bottom. This kept the plane tracking straight on the snow.

Things like this make my winters bearable.

Judging from your address, you're no stranger to the white stuff. I never tried to ROW but the ES was successful off frosty grass and very wet leaves.

Its either fly in the snow or wait till spring.

This winter's flier will be my Twin Star with its wide, flat bottom.
I'll add a snow skid to the TS's bottom if the rudder won't keep it going straight.

I'll probably build a foamy pusher to look like the BD5 I'll use a foam wing repalcement from a Sig Cadet that is sitting at the hobby shop and make a foam fuse with a T-600 motor and an 8cell NIMH that will do the trick!

I have an idea!..try an F86 with underwing tanks full of air for your ROW....better get a light one though...the tanks arent that big usually.........jk

We found that on hot days it would hardly climb, but on Cold days, it was a fantastic performer, may hav ejust been coincidence, but doubt it.
