Little progress


Just received my new mandrel for GE boom rolling. Itīs full steel and exactly the size and taper like in the drawings. I also did the part which goes into the fuselage not to taper but parallel, then itīs better to fit it into the holes in fuse.
Any recommendations for the possible layups is welcome.

Here's mine, also scratch built. Spar made very beefy, rolled my own boom from a WalMart pool cue! Very good thermal machine. Lands like a butterfly with sore feet!

Hi Len

How in the heck did you turn that long taper that is a very nice lathe job!!

It looks like the mandrel is set up for being held in centers you could use them for installing your glass cloth and be able to rotate it to keep the cloth tight while putting on the resin, i have some of the carbon felt and it is .004 thick you could use some of this too in having glass & carbon layers and help add to the stiffness of your tailboom.

Looks like you are off to a good start, good luck and have fun in your GE build.

Really the mandrel is put together from three parts, because putting this long and thin thing into lathe is quite impossible. Parts are screwed together but the connections are almost invisible. I didīnt lathe this myself, I know a craftsman whoīs dayjob is making molds and dies for jewellery So this wasīnt too hard for him.

NB! Thermaleer, very nice plane. I have these photos in my computer from earlyer time, to look and get some inspiration maybe for my own. What was your tailboom layup?

Question about spoiler servo. Original drawing show one servo inside the fuse, that means connecting spoiler control lines every time when assembling the plane. Question is, is there any reason why not to put little servo into each wing. It would be much easyer to connect the wires, maybe build some connector directly to wing root.

Thanks, thats about how I thought it myself. Seems much easyer than connecting control lines and checking if they have tension etc.

We didn't have servos this small when the GE first came out
Much easier to use a small spoiler servo now

Today I wrapped my GE spars with Vectran tow. Now I will paint the tow with epoxy.

Glued the stab together. Put the halves on the drawing to get the right angle and some square scrap wood to support the thing and get it precisely perpendicular.

I think here in Europe it wouldīnt be a lot. Everything here is at least a third more expencive than in US. But I like to scratchbuild, building for me is at least half of the fun Quite slow wright now though
