Maiden voyage of the SS Alpena

I've attached the web address for her maiden voyage.

There are thing to learn from my mistakes:

1. Make sure your batteries are up to their proper voltage.

2. Securer your ballast so it doesn't slip like mine did at launching.

3. I lost apiece of railing that was not firmly glued down... make sure every thing is secured.

4. And probably the most important... WEAR A TEE SHIRT SO YOU DON'T LOOK LIKE A BEACHED WHALE.

Haha, atleast she stayed afloat! LOL! Too bad about the lost railing though, she looks real sweet. Better luck next time.

Very nice. Been watching the Inland Lakes boats come and go for decades. Many of them are gone now. Your model is a fine reminder. Well done.

I have passed this boat more than 20 times in my lifetime. That's her alright! Now you can start laying the keel for the Townsend.

Great looking boat. I recently "discovered" the Alpena. I am thinking about building a laker and been viewing a ton of videos on Youtube to see what I like. The gimme is to do the Fitz, but was hoping to do something different.

I think I am leaning towards the Edward L Ryerson. Gotta love that stylized superstructure and funnel and the horn! Queen Mary may have been it's only equal.

Were you able to capture Alpena's horn?

Did you build off of plans?

Scott,

The Ryerson would be a great girl to build. Are you aware of a website called www.boatnerd.com? They have tons of photos and guys that love freighters.

Yes, I have a 'wav' file somewhere of her horn. No, I did not build off of plans.

I used tons of photographs and some sheer guessing of her dimensions.

If you need anything else from me drop me a PM.

If you want drawings of the Alpena in her original configuration contact historical collections of the great lakes at bowling green state university. They'll have the shipyard drawings of her as built. She was the Leon Fraser then, one of US steel's AA class. Her three sisters, the Ferbert, Vorheese and Fairless were not as lucky as she and didn't survive the '80s recession.

If you want dimensions, you can go to the Bowling Green State University Historical Collections of the Great Lakes site here: http://www.greatlakesmodeling.com/

Then click the "vessels" link and you can enter the name of the ship and it should come up if it was in service on the lakes, even if it had a different name earlier or later. You will get length, beam, draft, and most likely a photo. You can also contact them and see if they have drawings. If so, they will e-mail you a list and prices and you can decide what you need.

Boatnerd is just amazing and a complete treasure chest of photographs, go there everyday and even got some pics on there of one of the Ryerson's stable mates.

I always loved the paint scheme on the Central Marine Logistics boats, Ryerson, Sykes, and Block. http://www.centralmarinelogistics.com/fleet.html

On my way into work this morning I saw one of the boats which is putting the old Interlakers to pasture leaving Milwaukee. Not nearly as majestic.

I guessed at it. I've never seen either of them from this angle. Shooting into the sunrise in low light the shots weren't clear enough to make out names. I have only seen Innovation here in Milwaukee one time. Integrity is here most all the time. 99 times out of 100 I'd have been right. Thanks Tregurtha.

Guys,

Thanks for all the info on the Ryerson and where I can dig up more, it will definately be helpful. I most intrrested in seeing what she looks like below the waterline.

Prins Willem - Thanks for the link. I agree I really like the paint scheme on those boats too. As a Buckeye, the Scarlet and Gray/Black paint scheme really strikes a chord with me
