Dick, for the time being, I think you're right. There's no getting away from the fact that, at the very least, the windward foil will have to be raised every tack or gybe. And depending on the foil designer, the angle of incidence of the single main foil is likely to have to be adjusted. There's nothing like extra RM on a model as proven by the many surface piercers we see sorta foiling-and thats what the Bradfield wand system offers in abundance. Yes! If you consider being a nervous wreck fun. It's a real challenge to keep them upright, but it is a rush when the wing catches a breeze and the boat takes off like a bullet. You can't loose concentration for a second, and you really do have to practice to get good at it.

Foiling Catamaran Tests by Jonathan Everett


These are the latest photos of Jonathan Everett's foiling tests. Jonathan has raised the bar on his R&D efforts. Here is the e-mail Jonathan sent me discribing the tests.

I have spent a lot of time trying to get the foils working. It is not easy since I have them set up with servos and gears so that they can move fore and aft by 10 degrees. So the slot for the dagger boards has to be bigger, and it therefore will leak. I created an apron to go around it to stop the leaking, but it is not yet perfect.
I tried foiling the hulls in a river, but that turned out to be a bit of a disaster since the flow was not very smooth, with a few pressure waves and other turbulence. Also I had cut my hand so my dad was in the river with the boat on a string and I was trying to keep it straight by controlling the rudders - but that was hard with one hand and in the end the boat went side on and capsized and I lost one of the rudder foils. However, I rebuilt the foil controls with stronger servos this weekend (which took a few attempts due to various issues). The ones I have can't hold their position perfectly when subject to moderate force, so I think in the water they will be getting pushed out of position. After doing that I then took it to a lake and towed it by a boat and managed to get it to pop up on the foils, as you can see in the photos. There were a few problems with stability (the boat often came off the foils suddenly and I lost most of my control when it foiled) so any suggestions would be much apreciated! I know that I should have attached the string higher than I did but I have a feeling that I have a few more tests to go! Hopefully I will be able to implement this so I can foil it while sailing!

Very interesting! I can't tell where he's towing from but the best way is to tow from the height of the CE because that allows the foils to experience the same pitch forces as when sailing. If you have a working rudder you can go out to one side to develop the leeway the actual boat sails with which will help a properly designed UptiP foil. This may or may not help: on my foilers the main foil or foils are set at +2.5 degrees with the rudder foil or foils at zero degrees relative to the static waterline. The foil loading is set at .188lb per sq. inch.

Pictures of my experimental test model. The ama foils are variations on the AC 34 foils pioneered by Team New Zealand. The main foil uses dual midship wands(connected to the same axle) for altitude control:

Thanks! My foiler is 5.5' long, 6.7' beam, 9' rig(off the deck to top of Wing Tip flotation), 19.5" draft and 21.13 lb displacement.

Hello Everyone,

Just a quick update on the Wing Sail Catamaran (Black Cat) Model. I was recently contacted by Tom Herbert-Evens, he used to be the director of the Royal Bramuda Yacht Club, but has recently taken the job as the Communtiy Sailing Manager for The America's Cup Event Authority. Tom has asked to use my Wing Sail Cat design for the America's Cup Youth Leadership Program, as a build project for school kids. It goes without saying that I was happy to help. Yes I still have two kits cut-out of white PVC sheet. The kit includes all the parts made with PVC. It does not include the Carbon Fiber Beams, Mast, dagger boards or rudders.
