Ballerina by the Old School Model Aeroplane Factory.


With the recent, and sad passing of the great man that was Vic Smeed...................I felt that it was well past the time I built one of his designs.

Looking at the current kits on the market(few), but also the availability of plans, and a scratch build was considered, I settled on the pretty BALLERINA cut , in short kit form by the Old School Model Aeroplane Factory.

The box arrived today, and I was eager to see, and handle the parts that make up this model.
The plan is very nice, with clear instructions, and not at all cluttered, the is a brief A4 size page of the parts supplied, plus some notes on construction..............all very neatly packed, and beautifully clean laser cut parts.

There is wire bent for the gear, and some nice sort of semi balloon tyres............all very nice.

First impressions, excellent!

Looks very nice Ian. I presume it is going to be electric and R/C? Should be a delightful performer, like all of Vic's designs I have ever built. My similar size and shape Phil Smith designed Cardinal is an absolutely beautiful flyer with an el cheapo bell motor.

Looking forward to following the build log - enjoy!

Congratulations. Do keep us posted as the model progresses. I also admired Mr. Smeed's designs and I still think there were no better sport models. By the way, any news if his latest model, a low winger which I can't recall the name, has finally been available?

I think the low winger you refer to is the Lola. It's available on the UK ebay site (search for Vic Smeed's Lola). The Wee Snifter is also available.

Yes, George............It will be a small brushless, and li-po for battery.

It is described as 'radio assist'..................so that will be RET!.

The tailplane and fin/rudder were completed yesterday, but I will be away for a three day break from tomorrow, so hopefully the wing will be next on my return.

The Lola question has been answered, but you can see the short kit from OSMAF here:

The wing is now complete, but for covering.................as is the stab/rudder/fin.

And have now made a start on the fuselage.

I am using PVA, and a touch of cyno so far.

The fuselage is almost done, all I have to do is fit the servo tray, finish the bottom hatch , and fit the battery box, plus sand the cowl cheeks to a pointy front!!and 1/16 sheet around the cabin area.

Covering will be some fibrefilm, and maybe some Litespan, or a maybe , depending on the weight(which looks good at the moment) some shiny solafilm.....oh dear!

The Ballerina was finished late August.............the first flight was not a great success!.

It got off the ground ok....enough power..........but was not comfortable to fly, it was unstable. A touch of Dutch roll, maybe?

The dihedral is steep, and I really thought that I had enough, but an e mail to TOSMAF
seems I need more, so I broke the wing joint, and re-built as per plan.

I'm going to give it another try, but at the moment I'm a little puzzled!

If the problem was dutch rolling, this would indicate too much rather than too little dihedral. All the handling problems I have encountered with vintage F/F models converted to electric radio built in the last year have been solved by an increase in fin area and a matching reduction in the ratio of moveable rudder to fixed fin. Funnily enough handling problems afflicted my Halfax Spartan, Veron Cardinal and worst of all, my Tomboy, all were cured by the fin mods. On the other hand, my KK Bantam, two times Frog Tom Tit and Frog Zephyr have been fine as built, with the original fin areas. I would try reducing rudder movement (and, if you have it available, adding exponential) and moving the CG forward a bit before deciding whether you need more fin area.
