DC-9 EDF-50 that ROCKS!

47" Long
38" Wingspan
GWS EDF 50BH (11.1V motor w/ 5 bladed fan)*2 = 7.39oz of thrust
10A ESC
1200mah 11.1V Lipo battery
AUW - 10.45 oz's. Amazing!

Check it out (4 pages). What a fantastic building method this guy
has. It's wonderful. I'm going to try several planes this way,
using the new higher powered EDF-50BH with 5 blade fans.

I just got off a 12 hour shift, but darn it this DC-9 of his has got
me totally excited about building my EDF jets using this same
construction methods. It looks very simple to do and yet flys
extremely well due to lightweight building.

I hope the rest of you airliner/military cargo nuts can see the
potential this has for all of us. Totally cool. In fact this method of
construction would be awesome for ANY EDF-50-ish design.

Here's the REAL kicker! 23 minute flight times using Kokams!
Wow! Plus he estimates 20% charge left after that. Amazing.

My AN-225 (on this page) if built this same way would be
incredible! My way was much too heavy. Must make a version 2
eventually but I think a C-5, C-17 will be first. Since I'm around
them everyday.

The most amazing part of this to me is the 1mm thick foam skin!
That's like, nothing, zero weight! Perfect for small EDFs.

It really gets your imagination going doesn't it? Thinking of the
countless possibilites. That DC-9 looks so cool as it is and it's
not even painted yet. Too cool.

That is a good way to form zepron, to make an edf 50 jets.

I have been using foam skeletons similar, but not the same, for my low weight fiberglass reinforcement trials.

I'm not sure about the best glue to use. I know 3M is good for
sandwiching 2- 3mm pieces together, but for the rest, not sure.

Here's what I just ordered through DepronUSA. Should make a
good 4 airplanes easily. I'm planning on 35-40" wingspans with
lengths of approx 40 to 45 inches.

I know the shipping will probably be pretty high due to the 2
oversize pieces, but those will be the outline/frame of the
fuselage. I'd rather keep it one complete piece than smaller ones
glued together. So picture that as a view looking down from the
top, the frame. Then the doughnut/bulkheads will be cut from
the smaller 6 mm pieces. I'm going to mix in gray here and there
in the frame just to make it easier to see certain areas for servo
mounting, etc.

When I do a DC-9 or B717, I think I may go a little smaller than
he did so the fans won't have so much model to push around.
For 2 EDF-50's his plane is big! Pretty impressive. I'm surprised
it does so well, but obviously it's due to the 11.5 oz weight.

Am curious about the more powerful EDF-50BH fans mentioned in the article used as an upgrade to the EDF-50s. Is that an Asian variant of the EDF-55 soon to be released by GWS?

the edf-55 is a whole new animal... its 55mm diameter with a bigger motor and new fan and shroud... will be a lot more powerful than the 50...

Yeah, by the time I'm back from my trip hopefully that EDF-55 and
other new fans will be available. Looking forward to it!

Yes, I do believe this is ROG. He say's it has as much climb power
as any twin speed 400 (now that's impressive!). Again, the 11.5
oz weight being the huge contributor here.

To be honest with everyone, this type of progress with a small EDF airliner is what I've been waiting for. Now I'm getting ready to get all the supplies and run with this! Who knows, early next year if my plans work out I may end up kitting something.

Wow, that is amazing! 11.4 ounces on a 38" wingspan, impressive. He doesn't say what fans he replaced the EDF-50's with, but they're running on 3 cells so they must be more robust motors than the 50's. Neat construction technique!
