Those using Sony Vegas Pro 10...

which settings do you use to render your HD FPV video?

I do my editing in 64bit version (can preview 1080p smoothly), but when I'm done I
save the project load it up in 32bit version and render using the 32bit ffdshow codec
pack on XviD setting at one pass 4000Kbit/s for 720p vids and 5000-6000Kbit/s for 1080p vids.
There is a standalone 64bit XviD codec available but I find it is both slower and does
not provide the same quality during high motion scenes that ffdshow's XviD does.
Almost all my Skywalker vids are using these settings, so you can judge for yourself.
It is possible to get higher quality at lower bitrates with multiple passes and such, but it takes
a lot of time and energy.

BTW, do remember to
1. match the project frame rate to the source video frame rate
2. Right click on each imported clip in the timeline select Properties and then the "Disable Resample" option.
SVP will create annoying ghosting between frames about half the time, if you leave it on auto. I have never
seen an occasion where the effect was useful. Wish there was a way to turn it off permanently.
I see hundreds of FPV vids ruined by it every year.

Thanks Ian!

Noob question...I just downloaded the codec pack but how do you get Vegas to use this codec to render with it ?

Select AVI file type, and then Custom button. ffdshow should show up as one of the choices
in the Video Format dropdown, and then there's a Configure button which allows you to change
the settings. ffdshow contains many codecs, so you want to switch it to XviD and fixed bitrate.
It's the fastest rendering codec combination I know of.

One thing about the Custom setting screen. You have to select the frame rate there again.
Make sure it matches the project settings. I typically create a few different templates
named like this..
4000kbps - project size - 29.97fps - xvid
4000kbps - project size - 30fps - xvid
6000kbps - project size - 29.97fps - xvid
and so forth.
My Canon still camera shoots 30fps video, and my fpv recorders and GoPro use 29.97 which is why I have both.
I set the custom template to match the project size dimensions.

I render it as MGEG2 .m2t format.
2-4minute 720p is usually 500mb !

I think that one works best.
Rendering is pretty fast also .

Edit: What does "Resample" do to my clips ?

And where did you download the divX codec pack to use in Vegas ?
When I think about it, I usually download 1hours xVid HD dvdrip that is only 1gb big, with HD quality.
So maybe 500mb is allot for only 3minute clip?

MPEG2 is notoriously slow to encode unless you have a hardware encoder doing it.
It's also the least efficient encoding besides MJPEG. MPEG4 XviD is more efficient,
MPEG4 H.264 is more efficient still, but usually much slower.
Resample option will create ghosting in every frame where stuff is moving.

As I said above, download the ffdshow codec, not standalone XviD codec itself
and then follow the directions I laid out to use it.
