Proper pants for your UMX Sbach or Beast?

The other day, while being kinda frustrated with them, I decided to make myself some new wheel pants for my Sbach. I started out with a solid piece of balsa and tried to carve one out. All was going good till I wanted to hollow it out, just about impossible for something this small without it breaking apart. Next, I tried making a template. cut out three piece, glued it together and sanded to shape. It looked good but was still larger than I wanted, and to make it as small as I wanted would have made it too weak.

Then it hit me. I was inspired by Lupus78's 3D Hellcat build (https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1455808), thaks for the inspiration. Why not print it out in 3D. So after hours & hours of struggling with the shape I finally got a model I liked. I uploaded it to shapways and they currently have it in their cue to be printed.

I should have a few samples in about a week and a half. And was wondering if some of you would be interested in this. As long as everything goes as planned.

BTW, I also am having a nose cone produced also. I tried to design it to work with the GWS line of props. Kind of a press-fit on affair.

Let me know what you guys think.

Count me in. The originals are a joke for me anyway.

But did I say how much I love this plane?

I would certainly be interested!

And... how do the current wheel pants come off (besides being ripped off)?

Do they screw on and off or what?

I think they are pressed and glued onto the wire. One of mine spins around on the wire of the LG fairly easily.

The ones I designed, if all goes correctly, should clip onto the wire of the LG. These are the 1st things I ever had printed in 3D. So I'm not sure what kind of tolerances I can hold on them.

I've got my fingers crossed. lol

I will definitely keep you all posted. I'm also designing a few other things for the UM line of planes.

Any suggestions for most need things? I know there's been complaints about the battery cover for the Mossie.

Definitely interested! haven't had any issues with the stock pants but these would look so much better.

Just a little update guys.

I still have not received an e-mail saying they are on the way. So I doubt I will have these by the 26-27th. I'm going to shoot them an e-mail tonight and will hopefully get a response by tomorrow.

I will keep you all in the loop.

Good idea but you won't like the weight. I have many parts grown at work and these will be very heavy. I think you would be much better off having them vacuum formed from .010 polycarbonate in 2 pieces and glued together.

I can tell you that 3d printing isn't the lightest. It isn't that bad if you construct your model properly though. Is your model hollow? I've been doing it for over a year now. What material did you choose?
