I've flown an Easy Glider and an Easy Star with a camera pod offset to the right with no problems..
The pod contains the receiver and video camera from an LT-711 helicopter.
VGA image, but no sound... bummer.
The inverted vee-tail makes for very smooth non-jerky turns.

I did at first, but found the launch speed had to be quite high.
Neither plane really needed it.
On your plane, I'd try a landing gear for the first flight..

Checked the CG and found a real problem. My calculations were way off. The nose moment was too short to allow a reasonable amount of lead to bring it into balance.

I unloaded it and found the actual CG of the structure - then recalculated. The spreadsheet says the nose needs another 6 inches.

Hmmm...it did look kind of short. So it got a nose job (6" extension) with a long battery box. I can slide the Lipo fore and aft without any lateral impact. Also, moved the 5V regulator forward. The result is that it balances, without ballast, at an AUW of 80 ounces even. I will add a small ballast box on the right wing tip for trim.

At 80 ounces (includes camera) the wing loading is 15 oz/ sq ft. 12 oz if you include the pod in the wing area.

It could make sense to rig a take-off gear for initial tests. I'll see what I can do. That's not a problem for a few days 'cause we got 8" of snow last night.

Rigged a landing gear by attaching a ply plate to the underside with rubber bands around the fuselage and pod.

Might get to fly it this week.

Hi lads,

I just ran into this interesting thread and decided to

enclose a couple of photos showing my simple solution for camera underwing pods

The senior telemaster pic dates from 1994 and has in addition to the video camera (old supercircuits B&W job) a Ricoh SLR 35mm camera bolted to the fuselage on the opposite side. Final balancing is done with a lead weight at wing tip. Both cameras pan 90 degrees (down to straight ahead) The servo for the video cam is inside pod.

I have no problem handling the asymetrical drag with rudder trim.

I have also used the same video camera concept on telemaster 40

The Vamp picture shows same idea on newer bird

With the newer small format cameras and tiny 9g sevos I am pretty sure this concept can be implemented on an electric bird

Yes an OS BGX 35cc on the Senior telemaster which I eventually converted to gas

my new VAMP is 50cc CRRC powered

At Last!


The snow has finally melted. the field is dried out and everybody's back from vacation, so we scheduled a first flight for this afternoon.

Great idea, but the afternoon wind was up to 15 mph or so. Not good for a first flight, But....who's going home without at least one flight? So, we had to do it.

Take off was nice. The tail came off the ground as soon as it moved (photo 1). It responded to rudder on the ground and lifted off nicely (photo 2). As you can see it has up elevator and left aileron on lift off. The CG is intentionally forward but I need to remove some right wing ballast.

Powell (Pilot) says it flies great, but with the gusting wind we decided to get it back on the ground after one pass. He managed a perfect landing -- then a gust bounced it and the LG folded. No biggie. The gear is just strapped on with rubber bands.

It looks neat in the air. We'll try again tomorrow AM. Maybe I can get some photos with the sun low and at my back.
