Flame proof LiPo bags


What are the range of options when trying to flame proof a LiPo battery?

I have seen products like these:

But at 155g it is a little heavy for my liking, are there any lighter alternatives?

Any reason it can't though? Seems slightly safer to have the batteries wrapped up in a flame proof material.

LiPolys being charged generate very little heat, LiPolys being discharged as in most typical RC aircraft generate a great deal more heat. In most aircraft the LiP0lys are cooled by air flow. LiPoly enclosed in a bag equals no cooling air flow which eqyuals a hot LiPoly which equals a damaged LiPoly and one that is much more likly to puff or worse.

Don't buy any bag that hasn't been fire proof tested with the size lipos you will be using. Some are completely worthless for fire containment.

What could be worse than using a fire containment device you trust to protect you that doesn't work?

The problem comes when folks think that a custom-fitted one to a particular battery would work which it would not as the outgasses need a void to fill first before being expelled from the bag. If there is no room to vent into, the hot debris immediately shoots out of the containment without having first a chance to cool. The bag itself needs to be of sufficient quality to maintain its integrity in the process of course.

In all, the bag is designed to be used outside of an aircraft while charging or storing on a workbench or other appropriate area. User caaraa's point is also correct.

Actually that was my point as he did a cut n paste snip from my post #4.

This same subject has came up several times and I look forward to it coming up again.

Most commonly used LiPolys can vent with flames. There have been LiPolys made which are extremly flame resitent but due to less performance few in the RC filed were interested.
