Build Log

CL-Sport - EPP Sport Plane

Not sure what to call this one. It's somewhat modelled after the SA Ringrat and the Lil Jumping Bean control line planes. However, this will be 4ch RC.

This was more of an experiment to see what I could do with EPP foam than anything else.

- Construction is all EPP foam.
- Symmetrical airfoil wing with 1/2 x 1/4" balsa spar and 6mm EPP 'ribs'. Skin is 3mm EPP.
- Double layer 6mm EPP fuse with 2mm CF rod reinforcement, top and bottom.
- WS: 25"
- Length: 23"
- Motor Infinite A1705-1800, 17g, 6A Infinite ESC, 6x5 prop
- Battery: 2S 500mAh lipo
- 4x 5g servos
- RX Spektrum AR6115e

I still have quite a bit to finish her up. No maiden yet.

I don't have much for plans, just some outline sketches and the wing ribs. See attached.

Enjoy!

That looks really cool. I hope you get a video of the maiden.

Hey, watch this!

I have ten sheets of 3mm EPP staring at me that I have not come up with a good use for. Now I have motivation to try your wing structure. Thanks.

That wing is not the easiest to build. It took a lot of trial and error to sheet it. I built the wing one half at a time. I cut the spar then glued the ribs to it. Once the glue set (Beacon Fom-Tac), I glued the foam sheet. I cut a piece large enough to cover the wing half, applied glue to the ribs, the placed the rib structure on top of the foam and weighted it down. Once the glue set, I repeated the process to glue the top. You have to pull the sheet enough so it snugs up against the ribs but not enough to warp the wing. I repeated the process for the other wing half.

If I were to do it again, I would pay more attention to alignment as my wing is not quite perfect.

Way back when I built a Lil Jumping bean for slope flying. Two channel micro gear. People loved it. For along time it was the smallest plane out there.

I like they way this looks. I have added it to my to do list.

Buzz.

OMG! I had a Lil Jumpin' Bean CL waaaaaaaaaay back in my earlier days. Fun little plane as I remember. Anxious to see how your build turns out and flies. Good Luck.

Well, the build is complete except for the LG. I was able to bury all the servos, RX, and battery inside the wing. All that is left is to maiden her!

Well the maiden was a bust... sort of.

The plane flies but is incredibly pitch sensitive. Moving the CG forward didn't offer any improvement either. I even tried going tail heavy... no luck. It makes it very tricky to fly... you need to fly in high alpha to maintain decent control otherwise it wants to head for terra firma with the slightest amount of down elevator. Perhaps this is just a characteristic of the symmetrical airfoil?

The other issue, is the tail feathers twist far to much. You can actually see it in flight! I'm sure that is not helping.

Obviously the design is far from perfect... I guess that's what you get from TLAR (that looks about right) method of building. Not sure if I will spend any more time on it. At the very least it was fun building it!
